Stop Locking Threads
<soapbox>
Who cares if the subject is talked to death? Obviously someone still wants to talk about the same subject and it's not always easy to dig up an old thread and join it late in it's life. So you start a new one. The only thing that could possibly be wasted is disk space, and even a hundred thousand threads can't do that much damage.
Lock a thread if it's dramatically off topic, not if someone's saying something that's been said before. People need a chance to vent, if you're heard it before and don't care then just stop reading.

Comments

That said, I should comment that I've gone back and looked at the last few locks and they've all been (imho) justified. I just think the reason "posted before" is such a bad reason to lock a thread and I've come across it several times in the little amount of time I visit the message boards.

Also, if some topics, and we have quite some candidates, crop up on a weekly basis, mostly posted by people not long in the community, I think it's a safe bet that the biggest part of the community will be annoyed by yet another thread littering the frontpages.
Also, if you find an old thread to be difficult to ressurect, than that's maybe because those topics have often been discussed to an end. Sometimes, it's just better to accept that some things have been said, and simply go on with life.
I'm trying not to lock topics which give discussions that haven't really had a chance at the first time, for example because a flamewar errupted, a second one, but if a subject has been brought up multiple times, and the issue of shifting balance with different serversizes is one of them, chances are, it's simply been discussed.
Should you just want to vent, please join IRC or something. Should you not have noticed - these are the official boards.
And lastly, if you have issues with moderation policy, please use PMs, or at least don't post in General Discussion.

No '***Locked.***' anywhere. I can actually reply without of locking. Great, isn't it?

Wouldn't that be a sad, sad day when SBV gets moderator privs....
Bottom line people, It's their forums, It's their web space, and it's their bandwidth. It's their time and money that go into these forums, and if they wanna lock every thrid thread, it's their right.
