I loved the latest build by the way however, I've always said that the Marines have a gap in between VERY early game until exos come out, at this point fades and Lerks are up and before you know it..Onos are out.
Now, let me say one thing first. I'M EASY! CHILLED BACK so to speak, and I enjoy everything that's happened so far, apart from the new Exos (Rail gun) I think it's unnecessary.
My suggestion consists of a weapon. Very heavy MG, which a large back pack is needed to carry ammo. connecting to the MG itself.
I've always found it difficult to hold/ attempt to hold a position on my own after sending the 2 guy's with me to retrieve a lost Extractor.
Now, obviously NS2 will be compared to the movie 'Aliens' a lot..so here's my reference. The M56A2 smart gun could be used as an example.
Now, of course I have considered both sides:
+ The MG would have considerable amount of ammo
+ able to provide support for other marines OR able to hold down an area on your own. (within reason)
allowing some marines to fall back for a moment.
-You're SLOW. Running is almost impossible, making you very vulnerable.
-very long reload time, and weapon can overheat.
-would not be able to use a jet pack as a result of your ammo pack.
-you cannot switch to pistol/welder (if it would be chosen that you could switch, then the time between placing your MG onto your side and getting the sidearm/welder out could be increased.
- not as accurate.
The damage of the weapon could be similar to that of the assault rifle we have now, but a lot more ammo capacity and higher rate of fire. The M56A2 has an aprox. 600 rounds, I doubt it would be that in this game but 300 seems legit.

The issue that I see with this is that it fails to fulfill a unique role in the game, as it is basically a mini-exo. Personally I don't really see much of a gap between early and late game marines, as it is pretty much a constant progression of mines, shotguns, and weapon upgrades into jetpacks, exos, flamethrowers and grenade launchers.
Your idea has already been implemented in game. These are called Exos, which come with chainguns, double chainguns, or railgun.
