Well, first off I hope your Father is a network admin or has networking and computer hardware experience because it's pretty obvious you don't have any. That sounds mean but you really need to know this stuff if you are going to go into business for yourself. Setting up a network with proper equipment takes experience which you don't seem to have at this time. Don't feel bad though, I was just like you when I was 15. I thought I knew a lot for my age it turns out I don't know diddly squat when it comes to the complex things like proper network architecture, planning and layout, security and configuration. 10 years have gone by since I was 15 and I know enough now to run a stable and secure server and I’m always looking for ways to learn more.

As for running Counter-Strike, maybe you should look for your answers in the forums on the counter-strike homepage found here: http://www.counter-strike.net

Your best bet would to co-locate your game servers somewhere and purchase burstable bandwidth. Why, because you never know how much bandwidth you'll need. Running a CS and NS server could cost you more then a T1's worth of bandwidth, but not always. Use 1u rack mount servers so your not paying for a bunch of space.

Dont let these guys scare ya! Its like they would have expected you to post your business plan or something! A game cafe would not be that difficult to setup, its not like building an ATM network across 20 states or anything. Go for it and good luck dude! Locate it near a university or business park and youll do just fine.

Spider Gaming is a game cafe server, and we run our own servers. Why? While some internet users may experience really terrible ping on occasion, the people that actually come in and pay hard-earned cash get uber-ping (uber-ping consists of LAN ping between 5-20). We run a CS server and an NS server, as well as a web server, all on the same crappy router and 1.1 Mbs connection.

I personally only do the HLDS work (I'm 16 and haven't started networking classes yet; that changes spring semester), so generally I am not responsible for any nasty ping issues (I tweaked the MM and HLDS setup already). So long as your dad knows how to set up a network and you know (or can learn quickly, as I have done) how to set up an HLDS server, I can't see why you shouldn't go for it. Like playerhater says, don't let the big-bad server admins scare you out of the business; they spook me out all the time .

One tip I can give you is to provide services other than straight gaming. Try to sell other, slightly overpriced services along with the gaming. After all, we all know fast-food places don't make their money from the burgers but rather the very overpriced french fries and sugar water. Maybe make special deals to suck in the consumer. Most important of all, never get personal with the bulk of your clients. While you may make some okay relationships, you won't make any money.

i guess you got a point. This is going to be in dallas, TX right? isn't this one incredibly big area for co-location facilities. For any server unless you plan on just webhosting and browsing a T1 won't be as nice for a server as co-locating it behing a 100mbps line. Lets think about this now, 100mbps vs. 1.5mbps. In most cases it will be cheaper to co-locate your server and you wont have to worry about the box(power, physical security, climate control) + it will be more stable than with the T1. I'm sure pings will still run great.

Are you asking if you need more/less cpu than a CS server for NS? if thats the case you haven't browsed the forums too much.! View the posted topics... you will find one posted about needing a good rig!
