Un-restrictive Biomass upgrades

So, pre-250, Aliens had all sorts of upgrades to choose from. Do I have lots of lerks on my team? Get Spores. Early fades? Upgrade Blink. Everyone still a skulk? Gotta get that Leap.
Now it's just, "You have to get this first and then this, then this..." The aliens no longer have a choice of what upgrade they want to get first.
I would suggest, instead of defining what you can get at a certain biomass level, let the Aliens CHOOSE what they want at that level. Instead of making them get Bilebomb at, what is it, level three biomass? Let them choose if they want something like Bilebomb, Leap, Shadow Step, or whatever at that early biomass level. I think for things like Xenocide, Leap would be a requirement to get before getting Xenocide. I don't agree with Umbra being before Spores, but if that's the case, then maybe Umbra would have to be a requirement before getting Spores?

With biomass it only unlocks the tech, you still have a choice of whether or not to upgrade to get the tech. You can get only stomp if you wish. You can biomass all the way up to spores and spam that to your hearts content again.
With the cost and upgrade time for additional biomass, you are going to get the upgrades in more or less the order they are offered. You might skip a couple, but it is mostly a linear path which is what I thought this patch was supposed to avoid.
I think you should be able to chose which upgrade goes to which biomass level, but certain upgrades would be restricted to a certain number of hives. That means that if you had 3 hives but no +biomass levels and no other upgrades you could upgrade stomp, leap, and spores as your first 3 slots, then you would have to upgrade mass to allow more upgrades. This would have the added benefit of allowing you to keep those three upgrades if you were later reduced to one fully massed hive, because they would be attached to the first biomass slots.
