Tutors

Ok , there's been some talk about this before , but i'm not sure if anyone actually decided anything , nor do i think there was much of a discussion so, here goes (delete me , this thread and what's left of my brain if i'm wrong dear moderators <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->)

I know i asked monse about "training servers" a _long_ time ago and he said they were allready planned (or something like that ;P) and now i have some questions and my own suggestion to each question

1q:How many trainingservers will there be?
1s:Have no idea about numbers , but i think using it as a normal server when it's not a trainingserver could work and , let's say it's a European server , it's a training server every day/every other day/once a week at a give time (say 6pm - 8pm CET or something)

2q:How many official tutors will there be?
2s:Again , no numbers <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> , but maybe like 2/server (if possible) 1 Human 1 Alien so you can SHOW how to do something (maybe ,if possible , make some admincommand so the tutor can take control over the commanders interface to show a learning commander , if it's not to big of a hassle)

euuum that's all i could think of.... (must be forgetting something as usual =P)

Comprox said 1 or 2 servers he was going to set aside, out of the 5 that he is purchasing, i hope.  I'm not to sure on how many people, but im assuming a max of 10, we'll see though, talk to comprox.

Well, Flayra Willing, I'll be trying to host a public server and a training server, however, I might only be able to host them for the Summer (cuz I might be going to work on a friend's grandfather's farm for the summer) but if I don't go in the summer, I can host during the summer. But I'll definately host one long enough to help NS get launched...and I am also hoping to help needy clans pay for servers.

    Good thing this....

this will not stop the "real" lamers but will prolly cut down on the "idiots" that ruin a lot of games by not knowing how to play <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> (i've seen it all to many times in gloom and it's really annoying)

I'm glad there's gonna be a training server or two. Because I know myself, and I'm sure quite a few other people, will benefit from it. And as Hikuso said... It'll keep the idiots out. Like me. Until I'm trained. :-P
  • HikusoHikuso Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 69Members
well...(hopefully) it won't keep the idiots out....
but it will change the idiots so they can no longer be classified as aliens (also teach those that are not really Idiots but still wants to make the learningcurve of NS shorter/faster) i.e: just because you're on a trainingserver doesn't mean you're an idiot <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Well I was talking with Jedisar about this earlier and like I said before, I'd be more than willing to act as a tutor, providing I'm good enough to call myself one <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->.

You know what would be cool? Have set times in the servers for specific things. People will teach (Im sure you wont have troubel finding a person to fill every hour of the day for every week and still have people only spending an hour a week teaching). Also, at off times, it could be used as a forum, for seasoned veterans to share tactics and youngens to learn the ropes and grab a few tricks of the trade. Maybe damage could be reduced or respawn times could be slashed to allow for a more "training" environment. As has already been mentioned, giving the tutor the ability to take control of the commander console along with a new commander to teach him the ropes would be a great addition, though I'd imagine that this would be a coding difficulty. Either way, even if training servers dont get off the ground, this community is supportive. I certainly wouldnt be averse to helping new players along in the actual servers as well as on the training servers. I think many in this supportive community share my opinion.

Great ideas humbaba, I could certainly see your ideas for a more friendly "training" environment taking off.  One of the biggest problems with CS nowadays is the community's handling of newbies.  They're generally scorned at and shunned by the more "1337" players, but not after a serious thrashing, i know because for a period of time  I was one.   <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->   Not only would these servers create a more experienced and challenging play environment for the veterans, it'll help ease new players into the game and prevent them from being scared off or giving up in frustration because they just can't kill anything.

Certainly is a good idea.  I'm used to learning a game the hard way, while getting my butt kicked in a server.  Usually I pick things up pretty fast and avoid getting picked upon, but with NS I'm down right scared of trying to take on a commander role for the first time.  I'll be thankful if someone's available to teach me how and I'd be happy to teach other's once I've learned.  Dedicated servers for learning are always huge helps for this kind of stuff.

Humbaba: greate ideas about slashing respawntime and lower dmg <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    (wheee i actually started a good thread here i think <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->)

    and i'm no coder buuuut:

i guess chasecam is going to be in the game and when chasing the commander you might see what he sees (if possible) i don't know about being able to see the mousepointer tho but if this is possible it shouldn't be all that hard to code a command (admin offcourse) that makes the tutor go commander and the current commander is pushed into chasecam of the commander , right?

i'm really clueless about theese things

ohyea... when can one apply for becoming a tutor?

my only way to contribute to this mod/community as i can't map/code/model/skin etc. etc.

Heh, it could be the forum and training server all at the same time. Vets could come and practice while others train.  It'd be just like boot camp!

You know, in the beginning of OP4, where you see guys around you doing pushups and practicing stuff an' things like that? It'd end up looking like that! <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

Well, many of the ideas Humba mentioned I had considered, but things such as the teacher/student commander is new and quite neat. As long as the teacher could kick a student out (if it is some guy just jacking around), it would be really neat, they could show them how to do it, and they just watch and repeat.

As for times and such, signups would be taken on a site (rr.org maybe) and time slots would be schedule'd and info sent out to participants. Time would be set for an hour, but could be exteneded for a little scrimming and such.

Alright, this has to be implemented. I've seen programs like this run for Tribes with a fairly high success rate. They train people, then have a scrimmage with all of the participants of one cycle, giving awards at the end for certain actions "best bomber team" "best offense" "best defender" and so on. Many Tribes clans watch and recruit straight out of this program, which could be another way to get this thing really involved with the NS community. As long as instructors/assistants are plentiful (and they will be), I'm sure this thing can be done. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I never played tribes before so I never heard of that, but Spyder that sounds really cool, especially the awards <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
Now just to find the tutors...

    Moderators: slap me for that
Flayra: ban my ip on all places to get NS from when it is released for one week , hmmm better make that two

Well, I think If some mappers want to help me, we could possibly design a map JUST for training..I.e. Make some area's not make anyone take any damage, Make firing ranges, etc.

It really would be quite easy...You make a half for the Marines, a half for the Aliens, and a part in between where both teams can scrimage without hurting anyone who doesn't want to fight yet. This would allow for a more boot-camp like feeling. My ideas for rooms would be the following:

Commander Area with multiple Command Consoles (if available) and tutor messages so that, even if no tutors are around, newbies can learn.

Firing range where players can test each of the weapons.

Building area (Perhaps with buildings being removed every 5-10 minutes) so that players can learn to build

and the live fire arms, combat training area, where both teams fight <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

And, of course, there would be a resource node for each team on each of their sides. The only place where you could be hurt would be in the center arena.

We could, in effect, turn this into a single map fairly easily..However, we could only cram so many people in each server, so we'd need 2 training servers, But it would allow for 24/7 training for both newbies and vets.

    <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

Hmm.... Maybe Flayra would be kind and make a version 1.5 with training stuff added in, after the trainers get a feel for what they need...
  • HikusoHikuso Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 69Members
Jedisar: face it 2 servers isn't enough , well... i don't really KNOW but methinks NS is going to be a rather big mod
i'd say about 1-2 servers each for west/east US maybe one or two in canada one in australia (and/or NZ) and maybe 3 in europe (maybe asia aswell...dunno about that)

but thing is , i don't really think (helluva lot of "i think" in my recent posts , but i don't really know anything so i won't say i do <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->) that 24/7 servers are needed , they can be used as regular servers aswell (alltho NS will prolly get swamped by servers , cause CS has a crazy number of servers and , let's face it , looking at a screenshot of someone playing NS is more exciting than playing CS =P)
  • JedisarJedisar Join Date: 2002-03-03 Member: 264Awaiting Authorization
Actually, I believe two would handle it just fine.

I also believe we DO need 24/7 servers...remember, people from all over will be playing this...besides, I think it would be nice to play NS a couple hours, then return to the server where you orginally trained and be able to practice in the firing range or in mock combat. You know? In the same way it's fun to re-play the OP Force Bootcamp.

and how will 2 servers be able to accomodate ppl from all over the world? and i suppose you'd want them locaded in nepal , just so that noone can say they didn't lag? <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->
  • JedisarJedisar Join Date: 2002-03-03 Member: 264Awaiting Authorization
Actually, yes, I would. Believe that two could handle it, that is. These servers would not be ***Combat*** servers, so they could easily accomidate more people. They'd be running 24/7, so if a player couldn't get in, they could come back later. I really don't think it will be much of a problem to handle training. Especially if some Mappers help me build this training map <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo--> /me nudges them

    Hint Hint.

Lol If I had someone to take me step by step I could probly become a good mapper.Of corse how menny people got that treatment? *hears silence* I rest my case...
