Improving performance

I am using only a decent, not great PC right now, i can upgrade for about 250€ but getting that money takes a bit time. so is there any other way of improving performance on my computer to have a FPS of at least 30?
my specs:
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6550D (512mb video ram, integrated)
Processor: AMD A8-3820 APU (2.5 ghz quad core)
8GB RAM

Get the latest graphic driver (13.8), turn every option to low.

I wouldn't recommend an APU to anyone.. in my experience they are ripe with compatibility issues and performance issues, as they are not meant for gaming, but rather photoshop / video editing etc.
I would suggest that you are hosed, given that hardware, (NS2 requires dedicated graphics cards, not integrated, hence the APU issue) but.. i'll wait to see what a screenshot (f12 key) looks like after entering r_stats in the console (~ key) while you are in game.

If you will get 30 FPS while nothing happens, in hot battles your FPS will drop to unplayable values. I'm sorry to say, but there is no magical ways to improve performance - you should make a hardware upgrade.

ooh, that's a tough one, that integrated graphics is pretty shockingly bad. I'm not against APUs but NS2 is very graphically demanding due to it's awesome graphics. It's also very cpu demanding and NS2 is poorly coded to work with the way an APU works. I suggest giving up on NS2 with your system, but that's terrible advice.

Try overclocking is your best bet.

They really do need to allow the user to tweak the intervals for certain areas of processing to happen.

No amount of tweaking would assist in this case, @turbine .. even the best APU on the market (and not his $120 budget version) can barely accomplish 20 fps with modern FPS games like metro 2033 and crysis 3... on their lowest settings.

@Ironhorse, I actually run ns2 on an apu + external video card comb and get decent fps. The main issue appears to be that the system ram is simply not fast enough for games at high frame rates. Basically any modern-ish Graphics card will do great things to your frame rates with an apu. I don't use that machine very often since it is my living room machine, but it runs perfectly well at 60+ fps.

It's an a-10 5800k and a Radeon HD 5770, which is numerically inferior to the onboard 7660 chip but blows it out of the water at run time.

The external video card is what is giving you decent FPS, though @confused , not the APU alone.

Onboard video is best left to playing web games and watching video. It has gotten a bit better in recent years, but is still nowhere near good enough for even medium-end gaming.

You can easily get an adequate graphics card for around 80 Euros. Take a look at the Radeon HD 7770 and GTX 650.
