The game seems playable for a minute or so then it just becomes very choppy, lots of stuttering and what not. I have set the details to lowest settings. If I minimize the screen with Ctral Alt Arrow It seems to restore the game for a few more minutes but this makes the game crash sometimes.

What window manager are you running? Gnome shell?
That sounds similar to the issue I was having under Fedora 19.

what graphics hardware are you running?

What does your r_stats look like?

It looks like XFCE was the culprit. I just installed Mate and the random choppy, stuttering went away.
I hope some others find this helpful. Thanks Appletalk.

My fix was to change out Gnome shell for metacity. Fixed the stuttering and hugely improved fps

Keep in mind to revert the window manager replacement you will have to restart X. Either "sudo init 3; sudo init 5" or restarting your computer.

    1) From your Gnome desktop, make sure Steam is running
    2) Open a terminal and run "metacity --replace" This will replace Gnome shell.
    3) Launch NS2 from the currently open Steam window.
    4) Enjoy your improved framerate.

Your fix works too. Any idea why this happens under certain window managers?
