Not what you think, actually. I was watching Mutant X (there was nothing else on, cut me a break <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->) and a mutant's power had the sound of the NS phase gate. Good thing I was watching the show and didn't just have it on in the background.. it would've freaked me out. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

"Ahh! A phase gate?!"

i'd imagine both the dev team and the producers of that mediocre show got the same sound effect from a library somewhere.

Remember that screeching death sound a dying imp would make in doom? I've heard that sound sooooo many other places. It's not just sounds either, theres one exact explosion I swear i've seen in 5 different tv shows, movies, or games. (the only place i remember off the top of my head is when a large rocket explodes on the city map in X-Com Apocalypse (most fun game evar!!))

The gates opening in DooM and the sound monsters make when spawning in DooM too. Heck, earlier I was watching the xXx DVD and the menu sound is from the spell Lightning of Lineage: The Bloodpledge. o_O

Yep. Same library. You can also catch many of the sounds (including the phase gate) in several episodes of the wonderful 'Mr. Show'.

I hear that DooM II *FWOOSH* sound everywhere.

On a kind of similar note, my best friend's band (The Polyphonic Spree), has a song that is being used in the new Hewlett Packard commercials. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I was watching Cowboy Bebop the other day (the fridge ep.)
As spike was booting up the computer it produced a quick tapping of keys and a few bleeps...

The exact same sound from when you get into the comm chair.

There was another one from bebop.. A sound ingame, that is... but I cannot remember which.

Geez.. amazing how many people pounced on me for pointing this out. I only said this because I thought it was funny to hear the sound someplace other than NS, not because I'm oblivious to "stock" sfx libraries that many firms use to save on some cash. I'm usually the first and only person to point those sounds out when I hear them, especially the 'wilhelm' scream that so many movies love to use.

Kotau, I had the episode on tape! And just earlier today taped over it =(
It's one of my favorites too. Not sure why, prolly Ed eating the blob thing at the end.

Anway, I haven't encountered (and recognized) sounds fron NS anywhere. I feel sad. Sorta.

And to make Doom feel better: I knew you knew about the sounds being reused by so many people. At least one of us understands <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Sealab 2021 uses a lot of videogame sounds. Doors opening and the footstep on metal sounds from NS are in there. The 'pig cop' roar from Duke Nukem has been in a couple of episodes. The creak of doors opening in Daggerfall have been in all kinds of movies and shows. Sound libraries are cool when you run across a familiar sound by surprise in something else.
