Hello, I bought NS2 a while ago and it was wonderful fun, now I tried to play it again, black screen. On launch it launches like a normal game and then the steam shift tab reminder for steam pops up, a few seconds later it starts glitching out and bugging in and out. If you shift tab you can open the window, but closing it causes the window to bug as well. I have tried deleting the files, corrupt check, turning off steam cloud, dxsetup, and even obby's nuke guide. I still have the exact same. I have left it alone for an hour without it loading, and cannot submit the bug report if I switch to it the window pops up but is invisible and covers the button, I have been having to ctrl alt delete and start task manager then end the procress. Some help would be wonderful, I liked this game and want to play it again. Also, I have nuked the game, still black screen.

    The tech dump from the crash. I have no idea what half of it is but I saw "error mod ' ' missing" I have unsubscribed from the one mod I had enabled, blue sun command station.

    That log looks pretty nasty:(

    Two things i would do: first i would remove the directory at %appdata%/Natural Selection 2/Workshop

    After you have done that verify your install using steam. (right click ns2 ->properties ->local files ->verify)

    After that it will hopefully be smooth sailing

    Edit: SPELLING. oh god, spelling.

    I have done that multiple times, I have even nuked the game. I have no idea what is wrong.

    Try turning off any programs that have an overlay, or disabling the overlay, ie: mumble, steam.
    Have seen this cause issues in the past
    Look for any application that affects games/other applications and see if it's interfering with ns2 at all.

    It looks like you have multiple hard drives, where is your windows, steam, and NS2 installed to? The same drive?

    Also, try to launch NS2 directly from your steam folder rather than through steam.

    As a side note, you may want to try changing download servers on steam when you reinstall NS2

    I have them all on the same drive, one drive is going bad, and I have tried launching from folder, but I do not know how to download the server.

    Find this line <device>Your current renderer</device> in system_options.xml located in your username/appdata/roaming/Natural Selection 2 folder. (rightclick and open whit notebook)
    And change it to whatever you are not using atm. <device>D3D9</device><device>D3D11</device> or <device>OpenGL</device> (case sensitive)
    That might fix it :)

    It seemed to be working but, D3D11 stoped the shift tab from spazzing but when hitting shift tab it still spazzed, and OpenGL is stopping all the spazzing and having the steam overlay work without issue, but it still does not show a load screen or anything but the black screen. I am going to let it run in backround on OpenGL for a while and see if it eventualy works, but it does not look like it.

    so, v 258 just came out. I am hoping that along the way this will fix your issue.
    However, if it does not can you run the game with -verbose set in steam->library->ns2->properties ->set launch options. and then post your log post 258.

    Would be super good.

    Okay, so looking at your last log it looks like this is how things are going down:

    You start up the game, it notices you have requested a mod to run at start up. The mod does not exist on the workshop. The game tries to load some things, fails "Wicked Bad"(tm) and gets confused and wanders off.

    What is probably happening is that one of the mods you are using is puled from the workshop for whatever reason.

    specifically you are running these mods at startup:
    <mods>
            <active_mods>820fba1 5fd7a38</active_mods>
        </mods>

    go to:C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\73756278\4920\remote and edit the above lines to look like this with note pad, should be around line 139:
    <mods>
            <active_mods></active_mods>
        </mods>

    should fix everything.

    I need some more help, I just opened the notepad and it is not on lines, it all in four LONG lines and when I used ctrl + f to search <mods> I saw what looked like the right line while it is installing, I am going to check after the reinstall, which I should have done as soon as the update came out, and then dig through it to see if I can find that right line.

    you may have better results with wordpad then. Worst case you can disable steam cloud, delete the file and things should go okay from there.

    Not working still. The update did however change it from blackscreen to instant crash.

    I am changing the game to it's own drive. I am getting bored and all I wanna play is NS2.

    From your log:

    "Error: Couldn't load 'renderer/Drawer.shader' (file not found)
    Error: Couldn't load 'game_setup.xml'
    Error: Attempting to set watchdog callback on NULL Lua state"

    Sounds like there's file access issues going on.
    Did you verify integrity of cache after deleting those files?

    So you had a bad drive, then? Should run some diagnostics if thats the case.
    (also, thanks for posting your fix!)

    The drive it was on before was not bad, maybe swapping drives just got steam to download it correctly?
