  Technically yes, but bots are super dumb, you won't have a good game.

  My friends and I are new/havent played for years and would like to play in amongst ourselves first to learn.
  
  Some follow up questions:
  
  1. Are there any instructions on how to do this?teg
  2. Are Alien and Marines both playable? or just marines?
  3. Will the opposing side have scripts for strategies and build up base/cap resources?

  You can do training mode. You can also do addbot numofbots 2 to spawn bots on alien team. Refer to wiki for more info. http://wiki.unknownworlds.com/index.php/Console_Commands

  AI never upgrade or expand, that's problem. It's just for testing thing out or test your ability to build.

  This game is to complex for a game AI to properly use it's features. Hell an AI that could do it would be pretty damn near a real Artifical Intelligence, and that would be a pretty big thing if they pulled that off :P

  The steps we took:
  
  1. Play --> Training with Bots
  2. Friends joined through steam/searched for game name in play -->typed in server name
