I am having the same problem. I downloaded NS2 from the humble bundle yesterday, and am eager to play it. Randomly, when I am in game i crash and get an error saying "failed to allocate (Latest amount is 14400000) bytes and will now terminate". It is quite frustrating as i really want to play! I'm not too sure how to use dropbox, so I can't post one of those though.

    Loony.

Windows 8.1 64 Bit, but compatibility mode with windows 7 doesn't help.

I don't think you could have picked a worse combination of OS, edition, and OS bit D:

I still seem to run everything else fine.

Regardless, you don't need to use dropbox (but it's really useful so I advise you google it some time). Just upload the tech_support.zip file to google drive (google it...). If your upload is slow then go into the zip and delete the dump file first. It's possible your issue can be solved with out it. If it isn't helpful then you can upload the whole thing later.

So when will someone go through the techsupport to tell me what went wrong?
  • Ghosthree3Ghosthree3 Join Date: 2010-02-13 Member: 70557Members, Reinforced - Supporter
I checked your zip but couldn't find anything in the log, I don't have the skills to examine the dump file sorry :( Someone else will though! (Or will know better what to look for).

In the mean time, turn all graphics options to low (except resolution) and see if it stops crashes. If it does I think I know what it is.

EDIT: The important one is having texture quality low, but let's test with all (or do both) anyway.

but it never happened before though
  • UterusUterus Norway Join Date: 2013-11-09 Member: 189230Members, Reinforced - Supporter
But what do you think it is if its the textures?
  • Ghosthree3Ghosthree3 Join Date: 2010-02-13 Member: 70557Members, Reinforced - Supporter
You either have low VRAM or your system memory is getting too full.

It never happened before, but the game does receive patches, if it's definitely been running fine on the current patch until just now then VRAM is probably fine and your system memory is the issue. That's only if having low textures helps though.

    I have a gtx770 with 2 gb and 8 gigs of ram

Doesn't mean your 8gb of ram isn't being all used up.

EDIT: Also can you confirm whether it was working THIS patch until just now? (Patch has been out for over a week).

I know but then ns2 must use 6 gigs of ram or more since i checked with google chrome on

Ok, so that means we can't rule out changes to the game. Anything that happened in that last patch could be causing it (probably not likely though). It's more likely you have installed or are now using some apps which are causing issues. Try and play with the low graphics, if it does crash (and doesn't completely close) check task manager and see how much ram it's using and how much is being used in total.

It's surprisingly easy to use a lot of ram, right now, doing nothing extraordinary except for using my browser (though that accounts for a lot of it) I'm using 4gb of my 8gb of memory.

...It wouldn't surprise me. First step, rule out any 3rd party renderer modifications.

Also googling that made me discover it forces vsync. Absolutely disgusting.

    Test without it.

Works great for titles like ac4 which either gives you 60 fps or 30

I will try it tomorrow since now its 11 pm and a crash could happen 3 games in.

A side note, I got around to attempting to open the dump to see if I could find anything obvious. This particular dump is useless (someone else confirm). Will need a new one if can't solve issue without.

EDIT: Just so you're aware, you have to run the techsupport.exe while the game is "crashed" without closing it or anything, leave the game hanging, generate the zip, save it, THEN close the game.

I am unable to find the reason but you may start by trying without weird boosters like:
    .ModLoad: 5bd50000 5d793000 C:\Program Files (x86)\Razer\Razer Game Booster\
    or
    D3DOverrider\D3DOverriderHooks.dll
