-Let the stream listen in to team A or B's comms via mumble during big pushes, openings, or whenever. (Gives a little insight to how teams function)
Huge +1 to this. This would be awesome. Listening to a team during an engagement would bring the viewers right down onto the playing field with the players they are watching and rooting for. You would get the viewers more involved as well as it wouldn't be a bad learning experience for those watching.
We actually had this setup last time and wanted to use it, but we had no time to test doing it and it was very odd to try and get to it, but yes I want to use it too! I've wanted to add this to casts too, like a directors commentary track for the you tube posts. think it would add a lot.
Basically you and Wasabi or whoever are casting at the time put a deafened and muted user in mumble channels of each team. (Ie your muted & deafened user in Team A's channel, Wasabis muted & deafened user in Team B's channel.) Then when you want to listen in you simply un-deafen yourself in the channel (stay muted) and broadcast the coms. Then re-deafen when you are finished. Obviously do not listen to both teams at once. :P
Thought about this. The only tricky part is making sure it's an entertaining time to do the switch. Pretty easy in L4D during a tank or quad, but when should you go the a teams comm in a game of NS2... I think you'd need someone else (not casting) to handle the actual swapping, too much potential for disaster otherwise and someone needs the foresight to see a big play incoming and make the swap in time.
That was my only concern. Deciding when to do it. I was thinking watching a team rollout might be interesting. Maybe up to the first engagement or something. Mid and late game might be hard to gauge.
I was thinking the only reliable time late game would be when a base hit was happening you would listen to the attacking side and if you catch it late (but still before it happens) you would quickly switch to the defending side to listen.

the timing of swaps comes down to having a caster there with enough game knowledge to predict important events. so does the problem of explaining strategy or the like. the most likely candidates to fill such a role would be from the participating teams themselves.
Reddog I love what you do for the community, but why hasn't UWE updated the page for the World Championship? I understand it's not "their" tournament per se, but considering how much effort, and support (financial and otherwise) the community has given the company over the years why haven't they been more supportive or vocal?
Seeing what you do (love Reddog's Roundup), yet, considering its been a WEEK since the tournament games have ended and yet the bracket hasn't been updated. I bring this up, because no matter what content is added its for nil if it doesn't get advertised on one of the main hubs for the game itself.
In otherwords, I'd like to see some developer participation for the WC. Heck, just update a webpage, or have the a link for the teams rosters would really help. A live feed is one thing, but having a bio page available for the community to read would be a nice way for people to choose someone to root for.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but isn't this World Championship supposed to be a good thing for the community? Why isn't it splashed all over the website for the game, instead of being treated as a footnote in the developers eyes?
UWE is providing funding for about half of the total event (if I recall correctly they're meeting if not exceeding the 30K that the fundraiser made). They were also instrumental in reaching out to Intel and Nvidia for donations, and if that had not happened this event never would have been accomplished. Hugh was present for the live reveal of the event and has written countless articles about the tournament at every stage of its development... I'm not sure there's much more UWE could really be doing, besides breaking out some more face paint.
At the beginning:
- show a five minute intro video that explains the not-NS2-native audience how the game works, what important structures are, how all the lifeforms are called and what they do, etc
- before a match happens on a map for the first time, show a short intro video (~1 min), explaining the map: general layout, important strategical locations and chokepoints etc
- introduce the teams (preferably also in short clips)
mid-event:
- basic introduction to common competetive strategies
- lifeform spotlights (e.g. videos about advanced play with certain lifeforms)
- in-depth (?) information about commanding
- community spotlight: overview about mods, custom maps, etc
- audience integration: do some interviews with live attendants
approaching the end:
- custom map spotlights
- playing mods (casters vs community? idk, anything)
- face-painting
- interviews with the teams who lost
- video clips showing the highlights so far (that is, if you are quick with video editing)
Remember to bring some merchandise. I want to buy an Onos t-shirt.
For the upcoming event would it be possible since we have so many teams going, to have a Pug with the available players?
The community could pick the captains (comms) and then captains pick their teams. It would be fun to see a warm up match between these player created teams composed of some of the best the community has to offer.
This would serve 3 purposes.
1 - Show how gathers work real time.
2 - Fans get to see dream teams never before thought of... since Archea...
3 - Kill time/warm up players.
That would be a lot of fun but I know we will be a little pressed for time. Since there are going to be three separate matches. (2 semis and a final) and teams need to be given a little time to warm up in between the games. If there is time, that could be really cool.

Yes! Don't know if it will be possible at all but I will definitely inquire on this.
How about a segment showing the evolution of NS2? Start from beta stages and some of the obstacles that UWE overcame, to large patch releases like Gorgeous and Reinforced. Some newer players may not remember what some early builds contained.

Why start with beta when you can start with alpha. Manggggg I fragged so many target dummies back in that day.

Why stop at the NS2 Alpha/Betas
Bring a bunch of HL1 disk and have a NS1 1.0 (1.04) throwback :P
(Unless there is a magical steam version of 1.04 I dont know about)
