Extra precaching... does it work?

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what extra precaching is supposed to do, but it doesn't seem to make much of any difference for me.

I still have textures popping in at the beginning of the first round or two for a good 30 seconds or so. Is this not what the "extra precaching" is supposed to prevent?

The texture pop-in is to do with texture streaming. The extra pre-caching is to reduce the hitching in fights etc, caused by loading a lot of additional bits and pieces. This has revealed a slightly more annoying issue to do with hitching when entering rooms, due to the loading of new things that were occluded previously. That needs to be solved separately though.

I've noticed some improvement with hitching since I started using it

Xeno and other alien explosions (railgun) are still causing hitching. Is that a different problem or can that be dealt with by precaching?

I usually don't notice hitching on vanilla ns2.

Just FYI tho, it can make it so that the first connection attempt always fails (you have to type retry in console etc) for some users..
