[263] First connection always fails

So, every time I want to launch a game and connect to a server, it always fails (could not establish connection to server).
Doesn't metter how I connect:
Server browser
Steam friend before game launched
Steam friend after game is launched

It always fails on first try. Second is OK.

    I suspect something amusing is happening on teh router side of this one.

    I would try running ping -t google.com while you connect. My guess is that you will see a sudden drop on the connection for a few seconds and then the second attempt once the connection is back up you will have good times.

    sounds like the same ol flooding.
    except for the fact that joining off of friends doesn't work. (you are trying from the main menu, yes? Be sure you aren't opening the server browser)

    NS2 doesn't limit the refresh rate (or it didn't used to, unclear if its been addressed since implemented) of the server browser, so sensitive routers can easily get flooded.
    Sometimes your router is robust enough to provide options (see the network connections stickied thread in here for instructions) and sometimes you have to rely on steam settings.
    Steam > settings > In-Game tab > In game server browser / Max pings per minute

    Anything show up in the log when using net_log 3 ?

    Yup, something changed with the last patch to cause this. The only thing I have different is that extended-precache setting turned on (to reduce the stutter). don't really care to go investigate myself to see if turning that off fixes it, though.

    @turtsmcgurt
    I had difficulty loading (screen froze for an abnormal amount of time) so i turned it off.
    you should try too

    i also have this problem, and only after the last patch, i do have the extended precache time on, so i'll try turning that off.

    Turned extra precaching off and I'm fine again, thanks! :)

    @xen32‌
    Awesome, yea i figured that might have been it.
    Will report it, thanks

    263 introduced this for me, too. I always launch with the +connect commandline parameter. Turning off extra precaching resolved for me, too.

    Hmmm, been happening to me every other connection attempt as well. Will turn off precaching next time I play, see if it helps.

    Completely honest question, not trying to stir anything up but how does something like this get past the betatesters? I'm assuming because 1. you didn't know about this and 2. you are "reporting it" that it hasn't been reported until now. Was that option not tested, or was it just chalked up to bad server connection ect, edit: or could it be that it doesn't affect everyone? (most likely option I suppose)

    I have this error as well (because I turned on extra precaching) - glad to see I'm not the only one. Pretty bad if you join your steam friend after waiting 15min for a slot. And then you get this error on first connection. Just to see that the server is full again when you retry ;)

    glad this one is sorted out now, like you said crazy, waiting 15 mins for a slot and it failing, and having to wait another 15 mins was...terrible.

    @turtsmcgurt‌
    Because it doesn't effect every single person.
    It occurred to me, and only me, out of all of our playtesters, and I remember mentioning it as it happened and having other users try.

    But my internet connection is such crap (Farmland) i was unsure what to blame.
    Despite having at least 12 testers on just our North American team, some bugs can make it past us due to hardware /software variance.
    Its just the nature of it. Especially with fringe cases like special options in the menu etc

    Eh, 2/3 isn't bad

    Turning off the "Extra Precaching" in options helped. Haven't had any issues with the first connection failing after that.

    Have it too since 263. But my microlag is aweful without the precaching...so i have to leave it on. One new build and I get three new bugs. How will ns2 end? I hope they fix everything soon and not in 4 months or add even more bugs in the next build. I just hope the game stops being upgraded at a point where I don't have bugs. Gosh I feel like im in the beta all over again. sooo muuuuch fruuustraation!!

    You shouldn't be getting that much micro lag/stutter if you are not GPU bound - and even then its only when loading new areas and it can be worked around by lowering settings.
    What kind of drive are you running NS2 on, and is it on the same as your OS and pagefile?
    Would be nice to see both your plog as well as your techsupport file.
