Questions about changes

I just have two questions about some changes to the game in recent builds I'm trying to understand why they happened.

1. Where did the Skulk taunt go? My taunt makes the Skulk laugh instead of growling.

2. Why do commanders start with zero personal resources? I can understand denying them the ability to gain personal resources as the match progresses but that initial 20 was extremely useful for base defense. Skulk rushes can absolutely devastate me when I'm commanding for marines so a couple of early mines were really useful. Similarly gorging and putting some hydras up stopped the solo marine who always goes straight for upgrades from destroying them. I know gorges can build things in the base faster and echo them out, was that the reason for no personal resources?

The commander starting with 0 resources was to force him to stay in the chair. There were a lot of people, especially at higher levels, being a gorge khamm and placing tunnels and building harvesters while they waited for res. All sorts of things they can do. I don't know the entire line of reasoning but the devs didn't want that. They didn't want that single extra player on the ground or something.

    I personally really liked it.

    1. Oversight. I miss the old taunts as well. They got merged together for some reason so taunt and chuckle do the same thing.

    2. What you just said is the reason. It's so that an alien commander can't go gorge and place 3 extra hydras for his team and build structures without a drifter or another gorge. Also to stop a free pack of mines or a shotgun drop.

The commander pres thing is a change that makes more sense when looked at from a competitive play perspective as opposed to pub play. Back when the commander started with 20 pres teams would frequently have their khamm double as a gorge and drop hydras while he waited for tres to come in. This left the rest of the players with enough pres to all go fade at the same time and comp play became really boring because it always boiled down to aliens waiting for the explosion of fades. By preventing the khamm from gorging, the hope was that one of the five other players would gorge thereby reducing the number of fades.

Of course, fades were rather extremely nerfed in the same patch that removed the commander pres, making the whole thing sort of redundant

We used to have the commander log out of the hive every 6 seconds during the pres tick to get the exact same amount of pres as field players. He would usually double as the second lerk at the 3rd-4th minute mark with a composition of 2 lerks and 4 fades. Drifters weren't very useful as battlecasters at that time so there wasn't really anything to do inside the hive.

    1. I asked about this when it first happenned- people had long complained about not being able to bind chuckle to a key.
Apparently somebody had been drinking copious amounts stupid-juice and decided the solution was to replace the skulk taunt sound with the chuckle sound, and not tell anyone else involved in the development of the game so it doesn't even go on the changelog.

    2. The UWE devs wanted to remove all semblances of creativity regarding game strats, so as well as implementing the extremely linear biomass upgrade system, they took away that starting 20 res to stop commanders placing base defenses or doing useful things with the res.

Considering they did this, it's a wonder commanders are able to leave the chair/hive at all! Following the same logic, If commanders aren't allowed to use Pres they should not be allowed to use Pweapons ;)

All alien lifeforms have the laugh, but skulks lost their own taunt.
I have a complaint about the Onos taunt, its just the stomp at a lower volume.

The Comm and Khamm can drop a SG or lerk egg at the cost of TRes to mitigate its effects. tbh, I thought this was a comp. problem they are trying to solve as the advent of an extra player (for aliens) being able to build stuff was very OP. ie, you could shift hive, echo a harvester, drop it again in base, power build it and hop back in the hive (giving the aliens very very fast expansions). In pubs, there is usually an over supply of gorges, so the Khamm doesn't really have to power build (though its nice, but would have less impact).
