For the alien commander, if you hover over the alien life form upgrades it tells you that researching the upgrade adds Health and new abilities for lifeforms.
However, after testing, researching does not add health in the current version, so either the tool tip is wrong, or the upgrade is bugged. Based on the change log for build 253 and 255, I don't think the tool tip was ever updated when it was changed to no longer require the upgrade to get health from biomass.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to report this, but I did not see a bug report forum or any clear link to a way to submit a bug report.

In build 253, you had to research lifeform upgrades in order for biomass to actually grant additional health to the associated lifeforms. With this change, tooltips were written for lifeform upgrades that explain how lifeform upgrade = more health and more abilities.
Then, in build 255, it was changed so that biomass grants health immediately to all lifeforms (and researching lifeform upgrades is not necessary to provide additional health).
However, despite the change in 255, the tooltips for lifeform upgrades from 253 still exist. So the tooltips imply that researching lifeform upgrades grant additional health - when really it doesn't anymore.
