Hello,
I am trying to run NS2 build 270 on linux (64bit).
Unfortunately the game crashes as soon as it's finished loading a map, i.e. at the transition from the loading screen to ingame.
I have verified the integrity of my game files, and deleted everything before reinstalling the game.

The terminal output is:
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(ns2_linux32)/version(1.0)
pid 17095 != 17045, skipping destruction (fork without exec?)
pid 17082 != 17045, skipping destruction (fork without exec?)

Game update: AppID 4920 "Natural Selection 2", ProcID 17025, IP ::7:42

warning: The VAD has been replaced by a hack pending a complete rewrite
mmap() failed: Cannot allocate memory
Game removed: AppID 4920 "Natural Selection 2", ProcID 17025

Other posts indicated that it might be a problem with the texture size (due to "mmap() failed: Cannot allocate memory"). I already set all to the bare minimum, so there is nothing I could improve. I do also have 16GB RAM, so that should not be a problem.
Could this error maybe indicate insufficient amounts of memory on the GPU?

I don't really know how to provide you with any more information, so please tell me what you need (I found "techsupport.pdb" in the NS2 folder, might that be helpful?).

Thanks for any help,
kpj

    What GPU do you have?

Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)

So it might be that my GPU is simply not good enough. I guess there is also no workaround for that problem?

That GPU gives around 1.5 GiB video memory. Fits in the requirements.

As I understood from the other topics, if the video memory is too small for selected texture quality - it starts doing something that it shouldn't do too much. And then fails.

mmap error is mentioned in that posts too. I think that devs have already looked up what exactly the game tries to allocate with that failing mmap call.

I already set everything to lowest quality, and as my GPU fits the requirements the video memory should not be too small for NS2, right?

It was suggested to turn off "atmospherics and ambient occlusion". That did not help for me.

Other people suggest that it might be related to the kernel version. But this is already pretty outdated and doesn't help in my case.

NS2 does not support integrated graphics, it requires a dedicated graphics accelerator such as a AMD/ATi or Nvidia class card.

So you're saying that my Specs aren't good enough?
Or are integrated GPUs fundamentally different from dedicated ones?

I'm saying your system does not meet NS2's minimum requirement, as stated on the NS2 Steam Store page.

We currently do not support integrated graphics chips. Intel's drivers for OpenGL are also known to have some issues with rendering and we do not test NS2 using integrated chips. You're welcome to try, but it is not supported.
