Locational Binds

<div class="IPBDescription">please implement these sooner or later</div> As an avid player of action half-life, I would like to say that this is a great mod. I love the hell out of it and keep up the good work guys.

One thing I haven't seen anybody mention and that I think would greatly improve the game is locational binds. Action half-life has them and I think that incorporating them into NS would improve gameplay immensely.

Example for those that don't know what I'm talking about:

When I type these into normal chat during gameplay in action HL, this is the result-

%w= weapon
%V= last player sighted
%I= item
<u><b>%L = LOCATION</b></u>

the only one that would be appropriate for NS is the %L, which tells your location. Useful for those that do not use voice comm or to bind things in general. For instance, if I bind x "say_team I'm at %L, resources nozzle here commander", when I press X it would say the likes of "I'm at Hera Entrance and Reception, resource nozzle here commander."

this would be excellent for when my family is asleep and I try not to use voice comm and wake them up.

Also, if you're in between locations (Shows no location on the HUD) it prints your last known location with (Near) after it. Good idea. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Don't know how tough it would be to implement, but I REALLY like that idea.

Well there is already a map entity for location, the hud indicator that tells you where you are. So it should be pretty easy for Flayra to code it in. Day of Defeat has the same location wildcards, as there called, and they are very useful.

This has been suggested before, and I'm willing to bet it's in the next client update, which is the next scheduled patch. I'd love to see this addition, as it would help teamplay a good bit.

Wouldn't be hard at all... it already shows your location in the corner, and since that location is stored as a variable (Probably %Location <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->) You can just use the 'say' command as afunction that processes /L or something as %location. It's been a while since I've done this crap, so don't mind me.

The "weapon" and "equipment (heavy armor, jetpack)" wildcards would still be quite useful in NS. If someone lugging around a lot of resource points calls for backup, you'll want to make an extra effort to keep him alive.

As stated, this is present in a great number of mods over at least two games (Quake 2 mods used it). It shouldn't require much on the server code end, and extremely minor updates to all maps.

Sounds like an old idea i posted long ago borrowed from FLF.

Instead of havign alot of binds and scripts they just should implent so the location name is shown before the playername.

ex: (Cargo bay hive)Kobra: we need more defense here.

Back in Quake 3 Fortress we had some additional wildcards that it might be worth adding to that list:

$D - location of your last death, this is very handy when you turn the corner and die to a bunch of fades. Upon respawning you probably want to relay the position of the alien team, a simple $L is not helpful here.

$A/$H/etc. - ammo, health and armour counts. We sometimes had these on the end of location comms, so your status is broadcast everytime you report your position. Makes it easier to weld/drop ammo/health on you without you needing to specifically call for it.

    Say_team "POS> $L [$H|$A]"

In Q3F, wildcards also varied depending on the case of the letter used, $L would report your location, however if you used a lower case L other players would see their own location in the message. This was mainly used with the $N (name) variable and the tell_target command. You could aim at a player, and do "tell_target Follow me, $n". Your teammate sees their name in the message, while no one else recieves the message.

The 'last person sighted" variable looks like it could perform this function very well and would probably be useful. If Flayra adds wildcards in at some point, i don't see a reason not to have as many variables as we can think of. It will really help pub communication, where the voice channel is usually flooded by the random mexican guy who insists on singing into the mike for the entire match. Prebound comms are also snappier and to the point.

i have posted this also on another thread with this same idear.

it most certainly can be implimented and already has, its a plug in on a server called voogru.com, i have used the commands on the server and they help alot, although it only has %h HP %a Armor $i Last Seen %r Res
but it is still handy, especaly for gorges at a hive.
But as far as i know Voo's Plugins arnt publicly avalibal for ppl to DL.
