4x4km world size

I read this from someone from underworld on the steam forums and I sincerely hope this is false.

If this is the current world size I don't really care as I know more is coming, but if this is the max planned world size then I might as well cry myself to sleep tonight.

It's an ocean, and while I realize that it's better to handcraft everything, not being able to lose yourself IN AN OCEAN seems kinda silly.

I was hoping to be able to get away from the mother ship and lose sight of it completely.

Especially in a exploration themed game, a 4x4km world size makes the cyclops feel worthless as you could just use the seamoth to travel the entire world.

I agree... I think we should wait and see if we can get confirmation before flying off the handle (not trying to imply you are, just saying I'm giving UWE the benefit of the doubt)

Well duh, my second sentence says that lol, but here, I'll provide some backup.

    "Originally posted by MouldyK:

4k meters in length. 2k in depth."

"Squeal like a pig" is the guy that said 4x2km.

Like I said, idk if he meant current or planned, so I'm just gonna wait for confrimation/denial.

Ah, I don't really think anyone here would start raging about something like that but the more popular a game gets, the worse things will seem (even if the majority happily keep quiet and play the game)

Just wanted to emphasize holding on a bit, as the Devs are focusing on seabases and actually some balancing, not necessarily increasing the world size

As of October 2014, 4km x 4km x 2km was the tentative target. This has been generally confirmed by some of the various map updates we've seen UWE make. I believe that it has not changed since then.

However, there has been recent talk that new areas (like a frozen/ice zone) may be added after the rest Subnautica is completed. This would likely depend on how successful SN turns out to be.

    Disclaimer: Spoken by an outsider.

P.S. Guessing the seamoth is traveling at 10km/h (6mph) it would take you over 20 minutes just to navigate across the map once. Assuming you are looking at 100m wide area each time, it would take you 13 hours just to see the entire underwater surface area. Add to that the huge cave systems and you are easily talking about 20 hours of "fast look" time -- and that's if you DON'T stop to investigate anything or partake in any of the other gameplay aspects.

    Density is what matters here

Perhaps they could just add on a procedural generation after the handcrafted portion?

    For the sake of immersion?

No one wants invisible walls or drop off clips

I agree that many areas outside the shallows require more detail work and diverse lifeforms to make them worth exploring. However, I also think that the problem of boring repetition only tends to increase as playable area increases. I'd rather see the existing areas be improved considerably before a bunch of mediocre areas (outside the current borders) are added. UWE's direction of adding beacons and localized resources will hopefully pull players to other areas, in turn making them more worth adding detail.

Umm, no, adding more size to a map doesn't inherently make things more repetitive

Do you mean if no other creatures or unique mechanics are added? Then I would agree, but again I trust UWE to add interesting entities to make every biome unique

My guess is, with the addition of the warpers, we'll eventually be able to "zone" into a new area with different biomes, creatures..etc

I just want to be able to lose sight of the mother ship, so I can look back and think "Look how far I've come"

The oceans in real life can look pretty similar in certain directions, very large procedural generated terrain won't really get that boring.

Coral reefs and stuff need to be handcrafted, but maybe they could make unique areas, with large open expanses of random terrain between?

I'm not saying no to procedural generation, but I wanted to put in my 2 cents since I strongly disagree that adding more size will increase repetition, though maybe that is just a misunderstanding

Frankly I was am advocate for procedural gen but the devs more or less decided against it

It is probably to much work but they should add a procedurely generated mode and see how popular it is or if people like it more and then build off from there.

TBH if they just double the world size from what they said in the OP, I would not argue.

Early versions of the game used procedural generation to help build the world (not fully procedural). Simply put, the world was no where near as good looking or fun to play in. It had huge limitations on the kind of world that is needed for this game. Not saying they may explore it down the road, but you will not be seeing it anytime soon.

This is part of map that devs are working on. For me if this area 4x4 km will be as detailed as shallow reefs then I will be happy with It. It will be much to see and explore. Maybe overtime They'll decide to make DLC if game will be succesful
