So the Dive Reel is interesting but what is the purpose of it?

I don't quite get the point of this tool? Is it to be used to help keep our place when currents are back ingame? Will we be able to attach it to the seamoth? That seems like the only really good use for it that I can think of.

Well played around with it some more and I think I get it's purpose, use it like bread crumbs when you go spelunking so you can find the way back out. Well as soon as it clipping into terrain is sorted out it will be.

Yup that is it's logical purpose. (And I believe I saw that written somewhere by the devs).

yep exactly. if you play latest experimental, it should be a lot more robust. lemme know what you think!

Same as when you use a real one when diving. Had to use one in Belize when we went cave diving, which is actually extremely scary stuff.

used the new reel its a must have especially when you go at night and the cave goes black and all you can see is your sea glide light ...it is critical to may a time I've died in cave in this game by running out of air.

so big up to the devs for thinking of this one

Now all we need is a Minotaur fish...

Just bumping this thread. This tool is really useful to keep track of where I park my seamoth (just plant it in the ground near it). It's a lot easier now combing for resources a fair distance away without worrying about finding your seamoth again. Gather resources, return to seamoth, dock with cyclops, profit! Ideally I'd like to see the seamoth eventually get its own special sonar ping, but this works in the meantime.

Haven't tried it in caves yet.

that's a awesome idea never thought of that one

To me the dive reel is mostly wasting an inventory space. If the reel could actually reel you back to it's ancor, potentially with a bit of a speed boost, I could see use for it. As it is now, I am actually quicker back to the surface with simply remembering, because I don't have to put in the extra time to detach it again.
I like the seamoth idea, though. If you could attach the reel directly to the seamoth, that would be sweet.

It's really helpful. Say you find a *really* deep cave. Anchor a diving reel at the mouth and get back into the seamoth. Now you should be able to find your way out. You can lock the other end at the bottom, drop a beacon, and now you can explore underwater and know where the route out is. Even better, use another dive reel from that area.

They're really, really useful for identifying routes through rough terrain. It's just a pity they aren't brighter/thicker so that they're easier to spot. You have to be right on top of them to see them.

I love the blasted little things for marking trails outside of caves, like between air corals in the kelp forest.

I have used this as a means to tell where I placed my next base outpost. I just drop the ancor at one spot then drop the device at the other.

How about attaching the reel to the seamoth and locking it, so you can tow it? In case, silly old playerguy ran out of power and forgot to bring a spare cell :3
Edit: you could also use this to tow the blocking-an-entrance-stones so you don't have to abuse the poor little floaters anymore after getting the reel

I don't think a dive reel (basically a piece of thread) should be able to "tow" anything lol. It's not a reinforced steel cable :P As for its usefulness, it is VERY useful, especially since they made it so you can hook the device itself into the ground after using the hook to create a permanent line, or you can hook the first end then swap to use other items while keeping the reel on your belt, so when it comes time to dash back for oxygen, you can quickly retrace your 'steps'.

We just need it to be made thicker and/or orange or some other visible colour, and it'll be even better :)

I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of it being able to pull the player back quickly like an emergency zip line. From a gameplay fun element, it could be pretty cool, but I'm not sure whether it would ruin the current feel of it as being more of a breadcrumbs trail, and turn it into too much of a bat-hook xD

Maybe an upgraded version later on. With reinforced steel cable and battery, for towing and bathook capabilities :P
After seeing this thread I actually started using the thing and I really like it for marking the place where my inventory got full, returning to base, crafting, and then returning where I left off.
If the reel could bathook you back, this would really speed up the tiresome "swim back and forth to base" process :)

Thicker Dive Reel should be incoming:

I'd kind of like some version of a tow cable in the Cyclops you could drag down and attach to things you want to dock. So for example seamoths without power but just below the depth limit of the Cyclops... or maybe exosuits that maybe can't get off the floor.

You could tow all sorts of stuff. Seamoths, rocks, crates, excape pods. You can already shove all of those, but towing would probably much easier to handle.
