I havent played a good game in two weeks because every decent sized game I join i get this error almost immediately.

I've messed with the rate, but I have no idea what it does. if anyone could explain it and why it might help, I'd appreciate it.

I really need help I want to play so much.

I used to get that in CS...and it lasted for about 3 or 4 months before it stopped.

    It seems to fix overtime.

rate is the amount of data being exchanged between you and the server. try to decrease it.

It's fairly common for 56k modem users ( especially cheapo internal modems like mine..) I found setting my rate to 4400 helped, but I still get them now and again..

Yeah but I've been getting the same problem. And I don't have a crappy 56k either. Here are my PC specs:
    Pentium 4
    Windows XP professional
    512 RAM
    2.8Ghz
    ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
    DSL

Before I got this new computer I was using a laptop, a pentium 3, , windows 2000, geforce 2 laptop. No problems what so ever not a single bit of lag.

However, with my new computer, as soon as I join a game my ping goes from 50 to over 4,000. Using the same DSL modem as I did with the laptop.

Furthermore, my fps on the computer is 100. Any ideas?

It just "happens". Doesn't matter what type of computer or connection you have. It has nothing to do with rate. It's just like getting a cold...it...just....happens. Goes away after awhile. Took mine a good 3 or 4 months before it did.

Ah the joys of FEP. I used to get these ALOT during the older versions of HL, but I dont get them at all anymore. I dont know what actually causes them, but its my guess its the connection to the server (not your net connection, your connection to the server your playing on). Your connection may well be DSL but it can only go as fast as the wires to the server allow. Its like trying to drive a Porche down a one lane country road. The cars fast enough, but the road isn't.

Since I got a 2000+ AMD I never get FEPs anymore, just bizzare crashes and connection problems. XP just doesn't like my HL... if only Valve would patch and also fix the minimise bug/LAN screen bug! *sobs*
Setting your rate lower than your actual connection seems to help a little. FEPs are a real killer... I'm still on 56k despite my new machine and shudder remembering those massive pings and long periods of frozen frustration for me to return to a death message...
