Moon Pool, Seamoth and Player

Hi, new here and wanted to get some ideas off my chest after a few day's jamming Subnautica.

I don't know about the rest of you but unless people have been living in an area for a while I'm not about to go putting strange plants and animals (meat) in my mouth unless it has been deemed safe for consumption.
The humble potato as an example is a staple food source but eat it while green and you put your life at risk, same with soy beans which are toxic until fermented.

Apply this logic to an alien, yes ALIEN world now lets try this again... are you going to be putting anything unknown in your mouth?
I didn't think so. (Explosive diarrhea anyone?)
I can't tell what a lot of stuff is useful for IRL so how would your character do it on an alien planet where trees could be made of bone and alien fish blood might be hydrocarbons?

What I would like to see is a simple item scanner in the life pod .. and builder menu that you can put various objects into and after a brief analysis you get an entry in the PDA.
This entry would give a basic outline of what was put in it.
A fish would give you basic information like if it was edible or not, eg; hoop fish; "never eat the antennae" otherwise edible.
the airsack fish would state that it could be rendered down for water.
There could also be notes saying that further study could be useful for something else.
maybe like airsack fish might be used for flotation device with more study.
maybe even some sort of filtration device to make water or air filter mask to make air last longer, maybe the water purifier for base.
More research cycles could yield more information such as nutritional amounts, maybe make cooked food last longer.

Find a pink/purple crystal? Scan it and find out it's rich in lithium which can be used in manufacturing strong alloys or water reactants.
Coral? Hey it's got calcium! which somehow can be used to manufacture bleach which can be turned into clean water (Salt-water + bleach -> drinking water? *caugh bull caugh ... sorry, where was I?

Another thing I'd like to see is an expanded function for both the Moon Pool and the seamoth.
Give the Moon Pool the ability to give the seamoth intrinsic upgrades beyond the "chip" upgrades.
These would be complimentary and add variety, possibly even a way to encourage diversity.

An example is the solar upgrade, how does inserting a "chip" modify the hull exterior to collect solar radiation and convert that into usable power?
I know "future" and "advanced technology" but I still don't buy it.
Now if you used to Moon Pool to do an actual hull upgrade (what else are all those arms and other tech for?) that would incorporate the solar tech into the hull that would work.
For the cost of a solar panel (in material), you would now have a solar seamoth.

Maybe you want the seamoth to go deeper, put a chip in? Nope, well maybe...
Make some plasteel and enameled glass, upgrade the hull and now you have a reinforced seamoth.
Now I can see a chip improving calibrations to the pressure system that would allow deeper movement but to a lesser extent.
A reinforced hull might add 200m to to crush depth and 400m to collapse depth while the chip would add 100m to crush depth and only 50m to collapse depth.
This would give a reason to reinforce the hull and a diminishing return on pressure compensation chips.

Want a solar powered, reinforced seamoth? Nope.
Mutually exclusive upgrades would encourage specialisation and a need to make more than one.
Making a deep diving seamoth would see limited need for solar power as at those depths it would not work anyway.
Instead you would opt for the efficiency upgrade (it's a mini thermal generator! make it generate power in high/low temps!)

The same situation would come up with torpedoes and storage compartments.

Give the seamoth 3 hull upgrades, a "central" upgrade for it's hull. eg solar, reinforcing etc.
Port and starboard upgrade points for a torpedo or storage compartment, maybe extra thrusters.. (torpedo would act as a storage compartment for torpedoes)
Chip upgrades could give various ammo options for torpedoes like vortex or electro or acid.. what have you.

Electro-chip would still be a chip, internal wiring to surface plates..

I have many more ideas but it's late and I get increasingly dyslexic as I get tired and I'm on notepad. -_- ZZZzzzz..

Hope I haven't stood on any toes..

For a new player you already seem quite experienced!

True you cannot eat a glowing fish without knowing if that is dangerous or not - But then if the game became too realistic, the player would die from the nuclear blast once the Aurora explodes, and you would not last one week - at most - against foreign bacteria in which you have never come across before. Still, I like the idea of the pod having a research station to analyse fish and objects, perhaps revealing special attributes and other things.

As for the seamoth, I've felt that only the locker, or torpedo bay or what else have had graphic effects. The solar charger has no visual effect on the seamoth; Either Unknown Worlds are working on that or they sort of... became lazy. (No, you aren't lazy, Unknown Worlds, but I can't think of a better word to describe it  ) A permanent upgrade could perhaps wield more of a boost than just the tubular upgrades.

    Good ideas Mr Rieper!

Good news, this is being implemented in the next patch "H2O" as part of the fragment overhaul. Currently when you pick up a fish and take it to the fabricator, it is analysed there.

However with H20 you will need to scan it before it's cooking curing blueprint will appear

also on way, though the buoyancy aid and other minor items will be discovered by the scanner, animal eggs can be researched for more advanced technologies.

As for the air filter mask, there is the rebreather which eliminates depth penalties for your characters air supply.

Find a pink/purple crystal? Scan it and find out it's rich in lithium which can be used in manufacturing strong alloys or water reactants.

Preliminary scans from the Aurora already allow you to know this information. And yes bleach is used in the desalination of sea water already, you have to put it through some process, during which the salt clumps to the bleach particles.

Give the Moon Pool the ability to give the seamoth intrinsic upgrades beyond the "chip" upgrades.

Monopoly already pretty useful, charges seaming with refreshable base power and even repairs it. (I think)

An example is the solar upgrade, how does inserting a "chip" modify the hull exterior to collect solar radiation and convert that into usable power?

Don't like idea but no meaningful retort other than the amount of effort at the moment.

Want a solar powered, reinforced seamoth? Nope.
Mutually exclusive upgrades would encourage specialisation and a need to make more than one.
If I'm diving deep, I won't get any use from solar panel. Is more intuitive to make certain upgrade combos redundant instead of just a straight up no

Making a deep diving seamoth would see limited need for solar power as at those depths it would not work anyway.

    Nah, it's all good.

With no disrespect mate, but you could point out the whole games building system like that, like 4 titanium pieces and a lubricant makes a bioreactor. Before thinking that its pure nonsense, check out what sodium hypochlorite NaClO actually is. I think its amazing how they came up with that, to simplify the recepies to the very basics and just keeping the most essential.

Im sure quite a few of your ideas has been discussed by the devs, but as far as I have seen, they do their best not to make the game too complex. If the game gets too realistic, many people wont be able to enjoy it. But as we know, the game is still very new and much will still come. Again, I liked the ideas regarding of being able to upgrade the seamoth in general and I hope they will put such an upgrade in the game, but at the same time, I do enjoy that right now I can just put a chip into my seamoth to charge it during daytime.
