No. There was an inner layer to Ed Harris' helmet that could be flooded with the fluid breathing media.
Fluid breathing systems actually exist. As stated in the movie, they use a highly-oxygenated fluorocarbon emulsion to transport oxygen directly to the diver's lungs. And yes, I suspect this would be a horrible experience for a first-time user.
Interesting side note: Hippy's rat 'Beany' actually *did* breathe the FBS liquid. ASPCA supervised the filming.
Standart suit
and some sort of soft exosuit - the appearance of the radiation suit - a full helmet system
Then it's easy. The suit could get upgraded with radiation protection or liquid air breathing or .... Or just get liquid air tanks that only fit to the full helmet suit. And if not, the devs need an extra suit for this breathing system.
I'd somehow consider the full helmet suit as an advanced suit that allows all kind of things the ordinary suit can't have:
