  No. There was an inner layer to Ed Harris' helmet that could be flooded with the fluid breathing media.
  
  Fluid breathing systems actually exist. As stated in the movie, they use a highly-oxygenated fluorocarbon emulsion to transport oxygen directly to the diver's lungs. And yes, I suspect this would be a horrible experience for a first-time user.
  
  Interesting side note: Hippy's rat 'Beany' actually *did* breathe the FBS liquid. ASPCA supervised the filming.

  I think that 'to breath" this liquid a little harder then to breath a gas for humans lungs diaphragma. To 'pumping' liquid much harder then gas (i mean its physical density)

  The devs only need to use a modular suit system for their 2 suits they have:
  
  Standart suit
  
  and some sort of soft exosuit - the appearance of the radiation suit - a full helmet system
  
  
  Then it's easy. The suit could get upgraded with radiation protection or liquid air breathing or .... Or just get liquid air tanks that only fit to the full helmet suit. And if not, the devs need an extra suit for this breathing system.
  
  I'd somehow consider the full helmet suit as an advanced suit that allows all kind of things the ordinary suit can't have:
  

  • full radioactive protection
  • thermal protection from heat or cold
  • usage of liquid air breathing tanks
  • advanced hud through the helmet display

  Would also be nice if they change the still suit to a lining for the other suits so we can get the ability with out having to swap suits each time.
