64-bit or 32-bit? What do you think?

Right now, subnuatica are debating a choice: "Do we limit Subnautica to 64-bit systems only, or do we allow 32-bit systems in on the fun?
That question come because There are benefits to making Subnautica a 64-bit piece of software. Currently, The developers spend week after week working on memory optimisation. They prostrate themselves at the altar of 32-bit addressing to squeeze every last bit of ocean into the game. If the limit was not so restrictive, if there was more room to breathe, all this time could be spent on making Subnautica run with a faster framerate, our creature’s more intelligent, our terrain creation tools more powerful, or our graphics more impressive.
Existing customers with 64-bit systems would benefit enormously.
Furthermore most of the people who play subnuatica (like 95%) have 64-bit systems and only some don't , so to help the developers deside if to change subnuatica to 64-bit only or not, tell us what most of you think on the subject?

While 64 bit would be greatly needed for the game and I'm all for it, we can't forget the 32 bit players. If it's just easier to switch to 64 and be done with it then I say go for it

Keeping 32 bit support is akin to saying we should keep horse and buggies around.

Nobody should buy a system with less than 8G of memory nowadays and if you're a serious gamer, 16.

I assume the Xbone and PS4 are both running on 64-bits OS, right? So that shouldn't hold the step into 64-bits back...

This game could work in 32-bit, if it has proper streaming and LoD models. Huge and detailed environments have been done on 32-bit before and worked just fine, Fallout series/Oblivion/Crysis Engine/Unreal tech/Battlefield/Many a MMO and so on. But if they want to add more detail than those, mostly active entities (fish/plants), I guess 64-bits is the step to take

The question here isn't should they do it, but is it actually needed. It's not an easy task in any case to go from 32->64. Having support for both would probably mean having to develop two different versions...

TBH I cannot choose, besides it's not like we have any say on this technical detail of the development cycle :D

64bit is the only way to go, frankly if people are still on 32bit then they need a new pc.. i mean they cant keep the majority of us gamers stuck in empty worlds just for them to not purchase new hardware specially as almost all hardware is 64bit natively now. I mean my pc is like 7 years old and still its 64bit so if anyone is on 32bit they should accept that gamers and developers wont wait for ever for them to upgrade.

There might be a difference with machines early supporters have and standart players buying the released game have. But nonetheless, the situation gets better each month, so maybe at release time the players that still own a 32bit system already plan a 64bit upgrade or new system.

And as Obraxis said, even phones now have 64bit, making this game a perfect companion for mobile situations and platforms.

Third, I really don't know who will still enjoy a PC that might be more than 10 years old, if he didn't make the mistake of buying an already outdated 32bit system a few years ago, because it was so cheap.

    64 Bit only !
32 Bit Systems does not make any sence anymore.
Even all my Music producing Plugins went to 64 more and more last year, and this year i should have all my Stuff in 64 bit updated. The difference is huge. Way better compatibility, way better stability, way better performance, way more Ram usable for my Daw and Plugins. And this should exakt be the same with any Game that runs in 64 bit.

And then remember the Ram limitation of 32 Bit Systems. You dont want to play any half actual Game with only 2 or 4 GB of Ram todays, and most of them wouldnd even Start with less than 4 GB of Ram , im shure. :D

Subnautica should be 128-bit compatible. It is just a matter of time before 128-bit becomes the standard.

Yeah, right, only a few trillion yottabyte addressspace. I'll hop down to my cellar and activate my black hole programming device. If it doesn't eat up our earth, we'll talk tomorrow.

64-bit is not sufficient for the eventual Sensory Enhancement update. Without 128-bit, there is no difference between the taste of Cooked Peeper and Creepvine Sample.

Use SubNautica as a motivator to upgrade your PC.
One part at a time if needed to stay in a budget.
You will never regret the upgrade.

Those playing on archaic computers and who can't be bothered to read the minimum requirements should not be able to hold back progress. I'm honestly staggered this is even a question over 10 years since most of us built 64bit systems once the OS were available for us to have over 3.7gb registered ram.

Better games need better systems, and I want subnautica to be the best game it can be.

Kerbal Space Program is expected to go 64 bit with the next patch when they upgrade to the Unity 5 engine. It's been 32 bit up until this point. So yeah, people still seem to think it's a good idea for some reason. That game has proven otherwise. The limitations make it impossible to use a decent set of mods. Not sure what engine Subnautica uses, though.

I think Subnautica should be a 64-bit only game. (Ignore my vote)
