Game freezes/crashes after H2.0 Update: Display driver stopped responding and has recovered

Senn101Senn101 Join Date: 2016-01-16 Member: 211528Members
Ever since the H2.0 update, either before or just after the world loads, the game freezes and Windows displays the message "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." I checked, and I have the latest AMD driver. I've run it windowed at minimum setting and it still doesn't work, even after manually lowering the driver's graphics settings. I heard that the experimental branch was supposed to have some workarounds, but in experimental it freezes even earlier. If there's nothing to be done about it, I hope the devs add some kind of option to use pre-H2.0 graphics settings!

Ive had that issue as well and doing these steps fixed it for me. im not saying itll necessarily solve it for you as well but it couldnt hurt to try :D

You need to be on the Experimental mode first, then try this:

If the game does not even start, try this:
    - In steam, right click on Subnautica
    - In the "general" tab, click the "Set Launch Options..." button
    - Paste in: -force-d3d9
So it should look like this:

    zrcZGav.png

Click OK, then try launching it again.

If that still doesn't work, or you have other random issues, send us an email with the log file. Instructions: http://steamcommunity.com/app/264710/discussions/3/618456760257527342/

    Thanks!

Its a good fix for those using AMD cards that see their game either not starting at all, or freezing/crashing after it started.

It worked! It works even when it's not in experimental, and even on recommended graphics. Thanks so much! I would have been so bummed to not be able to play Subnautica anymore.

Okay, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is afflicted by this. I hope they patch it soon, because frankly I don't particularly like the chaos and instability that comes with experimental mode... but I suppose I won't have much choice, the game is totally broken for me until they figure out and patch a fix.

WEll it now gets into the game and after about 10-15 seconds it hardcrashes saying something about the Video card driver stopped working. That is one step further than I used to get. Back to good old "-force-d3d9" for me (HD5870 1Gb, Win7 64bits, experimental build)

And it might be me, but it loads up saves SUPER fast now...

Rainstorm, I don't care what voodoo magic this is, but I can now run experimental for >5 minutes without a crash. It was truly doing my head in. You, sir (or ma'am) are a legend!

    ...

I take it back... it only seemed to fix it - because I left my character at sea level for 10 minutes (while doing other stuff) I figured it was fixed. Nope - still crashes, usually when it appears to be trying to load the "next" bit of the terrain/ocean that I need to see - so particularly bad in the Seamoth. Save often. Rule #2, Save more often.

The only problem with the solution above that this way you are falling back to DirectX 9 instead of DirectX 11 and lose a lot of graphical effects which makes the game so beautiful, even if you have a DirectX 11 compatible graphic card. :(
    At least it is working.

In one way, this fixed my problem. It didn't make my graphics card explode, woo!
On the other hand, my screen was covered by a green rectangle with a black square in the dead center, all save for a pixel thin border around the edges, so I guess they still haven't managed to fix their shit yet. I paid money for this game dammit, the fact that I can't play it pisses me off.
