@SupaDupaNoodle Your lack of experience with the competitive scene and your inability to see the importance of it is the real arrogance here. You do not cater to the competitive nor do you particapate in it. How can you speak on its behalf.
I don't speak on its beahlf. I'm saying that it isn't important as it doesn't bring in new players, viewers, or revenue, and so it's loss through self-exile will not impact the game in any way except perhaps less tantrums and whining on these forums
@SupaDupaNoodle Your lack of experience with the competitive scene and your inability to see the importance of it is the real arrogance here. You do not cater to the competitive nor do you participate in it. How can you speak on its behalf.
I was there when NS1 competitive scene was taking it first steps in form of clanbase. I witnessed when FNSL turned to ENSL and Europeans had the first competitive platform for every European competitive player. I have played in almost every (E)NSL season to this day. I have seen players leave and the returning back. I was also there when NS1 was buried six feet under, but that grave formed foundation where NS2 competitive scene was build. I lived the hype of NS2 competitive potential. At some point it looked so good, we had thousands of players and spectators. With little later release date NS2 actually could have been popular competitive game. Still, every live tournament I played was joy and I was living my dream.
Now it’s safe to say that NS2’s competitive scene is crippled for good. There is no one reason behind it and no one has to take blame for it. If you want to blame something, blame UWE’s original marketing plan. They didn’t have player target group so they tried to make the game for everyone. I do believe that they would sold actually better if they had marketed NS2 from get go to those who missed the golden days of HL1 mods. The irony is that after NS2 release, pretty much every gaming genre has looked inspiration from old classic games. I will try my luck in Overwatch, but I still think that NS1 was the best game ever made and it’s sad to see it’s legacy to die.
This was the first game where I put in an absurd amount of hours in multiple aspects of it: mapping, coding and competitive play. A huge chunk of my time here has been in competitive, and I feel that helped a lot my work in this game, I never even thought that I'd be doing any of that, it just happened. It has been a great run and I've learned a lot of things, met a lot of interesting people, and had a great time.
While I'm posting this, I'll also mention that NS2+ has been handed over to Unknown Worlds, they fully own it now, so I won't be needed around here anymore. It's been fun!
whatever you guys where set out to do, you accived the exact opposite... In six months you divided the community on multiple occations, alienated your core player base, pushed through changes that clearly run under personal preference, exhausted your modders and other contributors (the fbx tool was for making modding easier right?.. the irony) and now you killed off the comp scene and the NS2NEWS.... bravo .. a wreckingball would not have been more efficient... I told you what to do from the start.
Replaysystem, Scalable balance system, sponsor map decals, better presentation through the streamers and an overhauled spec mode ... you choose to ignore me and drove down milk-what's-left-of-em-abbey...
but I'd forgive you if you'd ask. all you gotta do is STOP everything not related to the top points and get rid of IronHorse as an admin. You can not have a fruitfull dialog with essential members of your playerbase if the information never reaches you just because there was no "please" and "thank you" in the post.
Personally, I can't wait for the new 1v1 comp scene: Kasharic vs SupaDupaNoodle! Should be an epic time!
I hope you keep trolling in whatever game you blight next.
You guys don't speak for the entire competitive community. A few of you just threw a tantrum because you don't like healthbars and decided to take the league away from all the other comp players. Pathetic really.
Okay @SupaDupaNoodle , this is an official statement from the NSL Head Admin so you understand why we are stopping.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the past couple of years our player numbers have dwindled due to various reasons, mostly: People are just interested in other games / burned out on NS2.
We lost most of our staff, almost no referees or casters left to handle the matches. Admins leaving and trying to get new people for them.
The entire admin team was doing this for free and we did it in time we had left after working and living our normal lives.
I would personally love to keep the NSL going, even if there would only be a couple of teams left to play. But I just don't have the time for it because of work and family issues, neither do most of the others.
I have been part of the NSL staff since the balance mod cup back in 2013 as referee and was referee for COUNTLESS matches in the past years and enjoyed it every time. Back when i took over the Head Admin position over from @Pelargir i was told: "You are just trying to keep this boat from sinking faster." Which I was because i wanted people to have a nice place to play competitive matches.
So yeah, its mostly due to the staff having no time or motivation to keep things running and not being able to find replacements for them (myself included).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyways, I'll remember these years and use what I learned in them in the future, I just have to say these were a very enjoyable three and a half years. Especially the first couple of years when I actually played in the league.
The NS2WC was a blast, even if i wasn't able to attend personally. Was too busy moderating the twitch chat anyways
But the best part of the past years in the NSL, was meeting so many different people from all over the world and playing with them.
If there was any shining light of hope, it was ns2+. Sad to hear that uwe has its grubby claws in that now too. Said it before, saying it again, thank you @mendasp for making this game playable after uwe's neglect. Good luck to everyone in life after ns2! Lolol
(...) a new population of players, most likely more casual types, will be retained. (...)
A new comp community will form, and a new comp scene will develop. (...)
With all due respect, allow me to point out a tiny contradiction in your train of thoughts.
With all due respect, that isn't a contradiction. Saying that new players will come in, and that the majority of them will be casual (which is true of everything on the planet actually), or that a higher proportion of the ns2 community will be casual, doesn't preclude a new comp scene forming.
With that said I agree with josh that this game likely will not survive to that point so whilst the above is theoretically plausible that is where it ends.

@SupaDupaNoodle - respectfully, whilst you are entitled to your opinion, unfortunately it's objectively flawed in this case and actually quite insulting to the many admins, casters, modders and everyone else who put in endless hours of their own time to build, grow and maintain a competitive scene in a small indie game. You lack the necessary experience to understand this which is not your fault, as it comes inherently with anyone who lies outside of the scene. I can say with much certainty that this is the end of competitive NS2.
On that note, what a ride it has been. I've met many amazing people domestically and internationally through this game in casual but mostly in comp play, made some close friends irl and will take many of those memories with me.
Though the NSL joins the AusNS league now in the pages of history, I think we can all agree that despite all the games flaws, there were some great times had. My only regret is that our WC team narrowly missed out on making it to the semi finals - it would have been great to meet and play against many of you over there in cologne!
As for NS2, it's a shame that there is such a divide between casual and competitive, because both scenes are paramount for a game to be healthy and succeed. I would say both sides of the fence did damage to this relationship, but at the end of the day mistakes from the start meant that NS2 was always going to have a rough ride. I can only hope NS3, if it ever comes to fruition, learns from these mistakes and tries to invest and understand its community better.
Regardless it's been a fun. Hope to see many of you in overwatch.
It's unfortunate that UWE couldn't find a solution to keep the game stable for competitive play while still shaking up the gameplay to reinvigorate the pub scene. I'm not sure it was ever possible to do both given the resources that can feasibly be allocated to the game at this stage, UWE is not a large company. Nobody's perfect and everybody involved is doing their best, so I wish people on both sides of the pub/competitive divide could try to keep it civil.

So sad to see an old legacy die.
I remember NS1 from its release and years of pubbing till entering competitive NS at its late stage. Watching HDStarcraft with his first youtube castings and thinking "I'll do that for NS1 as well!". With the old youtube restriction of not having videos longer than 15 minutes so you had to separate those in pieces. And about 200kbit Upload link.
I remember when Fana first made me play NS2 alpha/beta during the end stage of NS1. It was horrible! Jetpacks felt like slowmotion and the performance was crappy as hell. But I started to enjoy it and moved over to NS2.
I remember the first gameplay videos I made for NS2. Also to meet UWE (Hugh) in Cologne during Beta at the Game Convention and his interview. Man, was I nervous in those old days.
I remember how swalk wanted to push the first NS2 league and we had a meeting with Jiriki to talk things over. He made me head admin and I made swalk league admin. At that time I could only not imagine the trouble I would put myself into.
I remember countless drama at the league start about swalks seedings. But more so, the countless drama swalk and me had internally. Controlling him was incredibly hard and maybe that was the biggest accomplishment I made in my "career". Always keeping the trolls calm and make them do tireless work for the NSL. Admins, referees, casters, team captains and the players. And zups. Oh man, zups. If you can handle zups, you can handle everyone. Also, does anyone remember the drama about pushing ENSL to NSL?
I remember the night NS2 was released with Hugh streaming it. I still can hear him scream excitedly during the stream that he managed to kill me during that live play since I of course joined over the friends list after I saw him join a server. My plan to constantly murder him on live cam didn't work out so well.
I remember all the talks with potential sponsors, interviews and so much more networking behind the scene. Unfortunetaly it didn't all pan out as planned, but with the fresh release of NS2 there were many interesting people to deal with. And many a**holes.
I remember endless problems with the ENSL website and so many programmers who started doing work and leaving unfinished business. We actually had a complete new site in PHP almost ready when the dev stopped working on it. But most annoyingly was the malfunctioning password reset forcing me to manually set intiial passwords and mail them several dozend times. With the new spike of users this was such a pain. I almost wanted to go to finland to punch jiriki for that. (note: he coded the original ENSL website) Putting up matches on the website was also not very comfortable, so glad I had swalk do most of it, haha.
I remember the american and australian leagues we put up and consolidated later on due to number of teams. God, forcing people to play with 200+ ping was clearly NOT FUN.
I remember about a hundred NSL staff members I put on the list and removed due to inactivity later on. So many referees and casters and other admin staff volunteered to do work, it was crazy. It was such an unbelievably hard working community with so much motivation.
I remember the first cologne event pre-release with Archaea and Exertus. I also remember my very own pre-release cup before NS2 league started kicking off. And I was kinda sad to see that I couldn't cast the first event since Hugh had other plans. But at this point understandable. But then there was a second cologne event with Archaea and Nexzil in the finals and I remember how swalk and me openly argued with High about casting since he broke his promise to let me co-cast it, let alone help organize any of it. God was I pissed at Hugh. But we kept working together for NS2 the next years, keeping things professional from there on.
I remember how Reddog came to the scene. Such a frikking nice guy and amazing personality, I had the best times of NS2 casting matches with him.
I remember the Insomnia event and was so shocked at Hugh for various reasons I won't post here. It was awesome to be on live stage since Hugh made up for cologne but the organization and execution of it was the worst I have ever seen. Yet it was fun for me, especially meeting the frenchies and fins in person. And the afterparty with the teams, Bonkers and the other community members who came over to our commodation (student dorms like 20km away haha). And beating Saunamen in darts.
I remember how people always kept joking about my streaming background. Green headset and my closet. I couldn't read "Narnia" anymore. WAAAAAH. Before my endless streaming marathons I was only smoking on the balcony. Sitting about 4-8 hours on the PC changed that, since then my apartment always smelled like an ashtray. Couldn't change it back till today.
I remember how Wasabi came up with his NS2WC idea and I was somewhere between "30k won't happen", "damn, organized by UWE again, please no facepainting again" and "why won't they let me in goddammit". And then they got Nvidia and Intel. And then Reddog came to me and said "Hey Wasabi and me want you in. Interested?" Hell f*ck yeah! And I remember how Reddog and me were sitting during about 2-6 AM UTC several nights panning out the production schedule, basically writing the whole script for the show to avoid absolutely any kind of "improvisation" attempts - in short, no more facepainting. I even wrote the scripts for It's super effective's commander strategy videos with a pre-voice recording to make sure to get everything right. And he made it even BETTER. Everyone made it so much better than anticipated. EVEN HUGH WAS AMAZING GOOD AS HOST, that blew our mind. Honestly, I think it's safe to say now, that all 4 of us (including Zefram) were most worried about him. And he was good! And there was no drama at all! Everything went as planned! Hell, I even got an afterparty location secured just before deadline. I remember how the bar owner was so sceptical about the number of people I told him and I had to pay 1000 EUR in advance so he'd open his bar this late. Even though located in cologne he couldn't imagine gamers from all over the world come and see such an event, haha. The rest of it you all know
I remember all the teams I played for and all the players I have played with. And I probably hard to deal with as player, I know I always have this backseat commanding attitude. And sorry for everyone I have left during changes to other teams. Sometimes because of players I wanted to play with or my urge to command and giving up field play. Or vice versa. Or getting booted because I was too bad
And then I remember how I always felt when coming home from work. "Damn, I have to login to practice with my team but I am tired as hell." Or "Damn, why does everyone need my attention. Screw this admin s*it, Hey Zefram can you do that for me?" Or "Damn I didn't upload a video on youtube for almost a week now." Everything felt more and more like work and less like a hobby. In short, I was worn out and had to give up. But that's how everyone's story ends. Work, family, other games, whatever. And this is how things should end. And other people chime in after, carrying on the torch. Pelagir, Yaluzan and loMe did great as far as I can tell from watching a bit the scene after my retirement. But it is sad to see that there won't be other people to take over and NS2 (competitive) is at its end.
But hell, it was a blast, wasn't it?
Thanks for everyone who put up so much time into this game, making this an unforgivable experience during my life I can always talk about in nostalgia. And I hope this thread ends the same way - with good memories about our beloved NS1/NS2 competitive game.
10,000+ hours for a game like Natural Selection? Worth it. See ya in NS3.

Well I'm sad and relieved that NSL is gone now at the same time.
I'm sad because I had an awesome time playing competitive since season 3 and season 9 was the most fun for me since season 5 tbh. So that's even sadder that the last season had to end like this.
Mistakes have been made (also by NSL) that lead to the death of the NSL.
Seems like alot of people will leave here... shame... hope you'll return when competitive scene rises again (yes I'm optimistic).
But now some things that I need to tell everyone:
Competitive Players have much less impact on the game than they think have. Yes we do have alot of skilled players who know the game and when it comes to balancing the game then those players are probably the most valuable input. However the player numbers are quite small in competitive. If you remember the NSL strike because of compmod and ns2+ being offline then you might also remember that the amount of players who played the game didn't change noticably. So pls do realise that the end of NSL is not the end of ns2.
I am also optimistic that a new competitive scene will rise again (most likely not NSL though). But I am also quite sure that this won't happen before 2017 and I trust the PDT that they are able to pull that off. And when that happens I hope to see people returning (well tbh I don't want all of them to return tbh...)
I will continue to stick around in ns2, I will support the devs as hard as I can because funnily enough they have the same goal as I do and I think they also have the same goal as 90% of the ns2 community. They do have a plan and I put my full trust in it.
Now as for the fun part. TAWmageddon is not planning to stop playing competitively. So everyone who wants to play some 6v6 action in a team feel free to ask us anytime.

It seems like we're not planning on quitting either.
I'd wait with any discussion concerning the future of the ensl, until everyone is done putting flowers on it. In 5 days or so.
Competitive NS2 face painting! Lets go!
