I fixed my game crashing but then my fix stopped working. D: (SOLVED kinda)

When I first started this game I played it on the highest settings and was absolutely enthralled by it for like 5 mins before it crashed.
'ok fine lets turn down the settings'
Turned the graphics to "minimum" booted up again and played until the first time it loaded a new biome. Then I got a crash again.
'oookay lets see what to do'
look online, people say to force directX graphics rendering might help. Change that. No difference still crashed in 5-10 mins when it was loading something.
'grr'
people say that F3 to bring up menu and F8 to be able to click stuff and change graphics options in game might help.
Bring up menu, press F8 to free up mouse and uncheck the "water volume," turn down the texture pack to 1, turn off light shafts and......
BOOM!!!! IT WORKS!!!
PLAY 16 HOURS STRAIGHT BECAUSE AMAZING. NO GLITCHES. NO CRASHING. Set up base, explore the crash and island etc etc game works.

woke up from dreaming that im a fish, boot up my aquarium (pc) load up game, open up menu (f3) press F8 to be able to click on the menu options aaaaand......

(happens on menu too not just during gameplay)
ok. well im a technomancer so i should be able to figure this out. press 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and see that they disable some of the commands. coolio maybe this is enough to play the game again today. load up aaaaand crash in 5 mins.
Well it worked before, what is different? I was unable to change the "water volume" checkbox (which doesnt have a number associated with it like the rest of the options) option this time, i was also unable to put the texture pack to 1. I tried to see if there was some TXT file of game preferences where i could change this setting on startup but i couldnt find an answer.

Mr. Googlemiester helps as much as he can but he cant find whats not there. He finds some old old posts about not being able to select the menu, about using f8 as a workaround, he finds a few about the f8 workaround not being fixed but sadly each of those are old and still unsolved.
TLDR- I cannot disable some of the graphics that prevented the game from crashing anymore. My F8 key doesnt let me select the menu any longer.

EDIT2: the game launches with "-force-gfx-direct" only launching from steam. when i use the desktop shortcut it seems to ignore this launch option and give me instability.
EDIT3: crashed again twice now after about 20 mins. HOWEVER i WAS able to use F8 to bring up the mouse. launching from steam directly and/or adding -force-gfx-direct helped.
