Possibly no more Biome Destruction?! AWESOME!

I just slapped together another basic base in Creative Mode. What's so special about that? I built a foundation slap-bang near a little patch of Acid Mushrooms and Coral...

... and I expected the placement of the Foundation to wipe away the Terrain and 'flatten' it--but it didn't! The little patch of mushrooms and coral did not get wiped away!

Now we just need the stilts or 'legs' of the modules to work properly and we're golden!

Unfortunately, building rooms near rock formations still damages them - and building a Moon Pool still flattens the Terrain which sucks - but if you build the Pool overhanging a cliff damage can be mitigated.

On the flip side, trying to build your base around geological formations is going to be a punch-in-the-d**k exercise without terrain deforming.

Put down foundations around a spire.
Start to build rooms, last room wont place because 4 pixels of spire are in the way.
    Destroy rooms and foundations.
Replace foundation trying to eyeball the 0.75 degree adjustment you need to make so the last room in a loop wont clip.
Build rooms, now the second one clips.
    Destroy, start again...

Hmmm, but there can be a work-around; giving the stilts/legs of foundations and base modules the ability to be raised or lowered onto the terrain - basically so that on uneven terrain or ground you can stop terrain from clipping into your base and also to get around rocks, trees etc.
I dunno, I'm sure the Devs will have a plan or will be able to resolve the issue :)

The problem there is that would only work if rooms snapped to centre of foundations. As it is with snapping to foundation edges there is always an overhang, so foundations could be placed in a non-clipping way but a building placed on them could clip by some margin.

Terrain does not deform - buildings cannot be placed where they clip / building will be confined to flat areas with few features
Terrain does not deform - buildings can be placed, but terrain will clip through them / building will be confined to flat areas with few features
Terrain deforms - can place where you like, making geological features part of your base / building not confined to certain areas

They are the three options the game can take. Personally neither of the top two strike me as satisfactory.

That was my one misgiving about terrain deformation in the first place: I would build glass corridors next to patches of acid mushrooms/coral so I'd have a nice view when walking past, only for them to be annihilated.
Can't say I've tried foundations for a long time though, the way structures don't snap to the middle is a big hangup for me.

That's actually a very good idea and I'd love to see it implemented!

Would this mean that terraforming in general has been removed as well?

The Devs are planning to remove terraforming completely, however, for the people who want to customise their area and what not, they may bring in transplantable fauna or a kind of 'paint' tool that you can place fauna around your base. I'm not completely sure on this, so don't take my word for it, but I believe I have seen a Dev say such a thing :P
