Base Turret Idea: Spotlight + Current Generator

So the current generator is going to be cut.

The only use that I ever have to for the thing is to make things go away from my base. Like when I deployed a baby Reefback from an aquarium nearby, for some local flavor, and it decided to attempt to swim through a MFR. So I set up a couple current generators to push it out a safe distance, and everyone was happy.

So, I was thinking, a base turret that acts like a spotlight with its enemy-tracking capability (plus, it ignore little fish) would combine well with a current generator. Basically a larger spotlight, and when it sees a large target, it tracks and pushes it away! Completely nonlethal, ignores passive fish, and with a few of them, you have decent base defense! (Should probably target small aggressive fish, though. Especially those power-suckers in Lava.)

Perhaps a scaled up and slightly adjusted Terraformer model? Also, it would be nice if it could have a little more range than spotlights currently trigger at. I've played with them in Boneshark areas, and they only ever trigger on things that are nearly on top of the base.

I rather hope they replace the current generator with a handheld "gun". Nothing that can kill anything, but can move (medium?) fish away from you. It'd be a useful starter tool and it'd make moving the lifepod around much easier than with the static current generator.

A base-build version sounds good too. There are bases I could use this future around entrances for. Just so I don't go outside only to find a set of teeth waiting for me; would be useful if it'd make a sound while active so I know what to expect.

There is already a handheld item FAR more effective than a current generator: http://subnautica.wikia.com/wiki/Repulsion_Cannon. Dunno if it works on the pod though.

But sound/effect is kind of what I had in mind, too. Put a couple windows in facing the hatch, and if all you see are light beams sweeping around, you're golden. If you see light beams AND bubbles pointed directly at something, you'll have something to contend with.

Depends a lot on what bases are going to have to contend with. I'd say something like this would be able to deal with anything up to and including confused Reefbacks bumping into rooms. Definitely any shark type, and any smaller carnivore fish.

If bases need to fend off Reaper Leviathans or worse, though? We're going to need bigger boats.

It doesn't work on the lifepod ánd it is late-midgame atm. I'm not interested in "punching" fish away, I'm looking to "push" them away. Different things.

Tthe rest should work out. It could be a nice security system; especially to protect scanner cameras would the scanner room not get security on its own. Ditto for any vehicles parked outside or in the moonpool.

The current generator never felt realistic. Even ignoring the fact that it's a magic box that hangs in the water, water is HEAVY. Action -> opposite reaction and all, water is heavy enough that a Seaglide can drag you through the water with not much of a current. Current generators basically move the equivalent of the Cyclops MAIN propeller at full speed.

And having that be a player-based gun would feel weird to me. It's a LOT of power, and unrealistic enough to put it in a base turret anyway. A repulsion-cannon turret would be MORE reasonable than a current-generator turret. But current-generator turrets just seem like a cooler concept to me, which is a great reason to ignore SOME realism in video games.

I think a good lifepod upgrade would be a small engine, to move it around as needed.

I booted up Eden Star again recently, and there's much more typical weapons in that one, but there's one energy turret that I always thought was neat. Basically an energy beam that shoves stuff away.

Subnautica has an entirely different feel, though, and it seems a shame to waste perfectly good FX. Plus the spotlight routine seems to work fine.

I would love it if they made a thing to make stuff get away from bases cause then I can build it near my base to get gasopods to go away (I hate them so much)

Anyone ever wish they make the current generator into a generator water flows through makes electeicity

Yeah, that's kind of the idea. Also Reefbacks, if you wind up in a situation where one rams your base and can't actually turn away.

That's a separate idea. And possibly not a terrible one? We're a little low on any ingame currents, though.

Man, yes! I really like the idea. Seriuously, thats just great. Instead of plain Laz0r nuking unwanted guests your base defense perimeter just gently pushes them away. Non-Lethal and it would perfectly fit into the "Use what the sea grants you" theme
