Are Gasopods Air-Breathers?

so 95% of the reason I play Subnautica is the fauna, and while messing around in Creative mode, I accidentally released a Gasopod I had hatched in the wrong place. A few in-game days later, I found a gasopod dead under my base. My base is located in a cave, so I was wondering if it had drowned. Do Gasopods need air? or did something else kill it?

Correct me if im wrong here, but if you watch them they are located in the safe shallows and occasionally swim to the surface. Again this is nothing more than a GUESS. But it would seem to me, they are like whales and return to the surface once in awhile to replenish their air supply. Once more just a guess. :dizzy:
