Will Ns Be Supported By Valve's Steam?

A fair question, right?
I cant say I fully comprehend what Steam is, and its functionality. If it is something that will support all mods.
I am true to NS, so will I need to download it, when it is released?

(Sorry if this question has been posted before, a search for "steam" tends to generate a lot of hits, especially in the mapper section)

VALVe and I have already done the work to get NS onto Steam, it's just a question of when to make it public. Being on Steam doesn't mean that it costs money, it just means that developers have the ability to charge money for software on it. I mostly would like NS on Steam because it would make it easier to play (you never have to patch again, all updates are automatic and transparent) and it would give NS more publicity and visibility.

NS will likely be on Steam after Steam 2.0 comes out and stabilizes but NS will always be available for free.

Charlie is the man at commanding!

Steam should make things easier because it takes Sierra out of the picture, and they are supposately slow with their updates.

I played with Steam when it first came out, it was pretty cool.. mostly becauser of Tracker, which was renamed to something else(forgot what).

When things on steam are released they are "transparent" how do we know what changes have been made ? I always like to see what is and has been changed and mess with the new features and discuss them with other NS Addicts.

Reply to Aphon: Tracker in Steam 1 has been renamed to "Friends" in Steam2.

Reply to Techwid: If the modmaker cares enough, changelists can be put on each mod's official website with each change. Also, as much as the updates are "transparent" (no need to get a .exe style update/patch from a website mirror) you still see when they happen; usually you'll perceive it as a longer load time to get onto a server if you need to get the latest update and it's bigger than average.

Does STEAM require a (paid) subscription?

    Not while it's in Beta.

But it does pretty much require a broadband connection.

From everything I've read steam will be FREE to everyone. The only time money is involved is if you want to 'buy' half-life or cs retail from it. It's the lazy way of doing things. If you already have Half-life or CS Retail you wont have to pay a cent.

If it works, then it is going to be a great way for developers to sell their games directly to the users without going through the publishers. It will make cut down the need to pay the publishers, sounds good for independent game developers.

Oh jeez this STEAM thing just plain confuses me. Maybe it doesn't confuse me as much as scare me...Let me explain.

I recently got a new PC, and installed HL and all of my favorite mods once again. Believe me-I have CHEWED through video cards on my old PC like nobody's business, so pretty much expect things not to work (irrational, of course-my new PC works great). Transferring EVERYTHING to this STEAM system may require input on my part, which may be too much to bear.

So this is really a message to Valve: Make STEAM easy enough to use that lazy people like me won't need to get a Phd to actually be able to realistically utilize it.

    I'm...so...scared...

    Um...what are you confused about?

You go to www.steampowered.com, download Steam, start Steam, click on Counter-Strike, click on Install.

I believe that will begin supporting server hoppers too much. Not a bad thing in CS but in NS its kind of annoying to have people constantly moving in and out of your team. If Flayra wants to go retail and start charging on NS, ill back him up, just let us inside peeps keep it for free . I think that when it patches it should be like blizzard updater and allow you to read through ALL the changes in the game. And the ingame messaging service to friends...what if it popped up in the middle of battle and messed you up? Maybe it doesnt do that but it still might interfere with your game somehow.
All I hav eto say for now i might be back to rant and rave about it if it sucks.

    Hippy!

Even so, I'm still willing to pay for it. Eager, even. Thanks, Flayra, and I certianly hope that your next employment allows you to do what you want. I'm always eager to see what you have in store for us next.

    -Ryan!
