Less optimisation or that's me ?

Hey,
I didn't play subnautica for few months now, last time I played was when the devs started to optimize the performance of the game. It was really smooth on my computer in medium (~25 FPS on ultra and maybe 35-40 on medium). I decided to wait until the full release to start a new game and have a bunch of new things to see.
So I started to play again yesterday and I was really surprise to only have ~20 FPS in medium. I set graphics to low in order to gain some FPS... same result the game is still not smooth I don't even have 25 FPS. In ultra I only loose 5 FPS which is really surprising. Am I missing something ? It's still possible to play but that's... annoying :s
However no more lags due to loading of the map that's a good point.

I even tried to change the texture quality ( F3 menu) but no changes in FPS so I stayed in the max textures to enjoy the beauty of the game : D
Is there anything else to change ?
Thanks and as always sorry if my english is not perfect.

Did you perhaps force some settings to "on"or "high" through your video card driver? Also in the Eye Candy update they did add some visual stuff and post processing, which could potentially impact performance if you're on the edge of minimum requirements

What do you mean by the settings of my video card driver ? It's something outside of the game settings ?
I disabled all of the new effects but maybe some of them are impossible to disable...
My PC is not a beast that's for sure but in others games I can play in medium with 30-40 FPS that's why I'm a bit confused.

Well if you don't know what they are, chances are you haven't changed them ;)

However, there are indeed settings outside of your games you can set up as a sort of global or application specific setting. If you have an ATI/AMD card it's called Catalyst Control Center and if you're on NVIDIA it's called "NVIDIA Settings"

If you have installed these official drivers and software package, they are accessible by right-clicking on your desktop and they tend to be shown on your taskbar next to the clock as well

Probably, or I just don't understand what it is because I'm french :D
In fact I tried 2 or 3 times to update my graphic card drivers but each time I faced graphics bugs so I went back to my original version... My version date of 2016.

I guess I should try again but I'm really scared to screw everything again and I remember that was really hard to go back to an old version.

Well if you're running older drivers, you could miss out on some optimizations in them. But, if you're running an older video card, running the latest drivers can also impact your performance.

Usually the driver installation program informs you about what the best compatible driver is for your particular card.

Do you happen to know which graphics card you're running?

    Coud you do this:
    1. Windows key + R
    2. In this window that pops up type the this, followed by an enter:
    3. dxdiag
    4. Wait for that to load and look at the bottom for a button called "save all information" (or the French variant  )
    5. Save the text file, copy paste it here or use something like https://pastebin.com/ and paste the generated link from that

That way we can have a look at your system hardware and driver version etc...

Hmm, seeing as you have a performance drop well below 50% of what you used to have. It might be that Subnautica is using the wrong graphics chip...

You do have your integrated graphics chip, the Intel HD Graphics 5500 enabled alongside the NVIDIA 830M. And that integrated chip just so happens to have around 50% the power of your 830M (probably less), which would explain the big drop in performance...

You can make sure Subnautica isn't choosing the wrong card by doing this in your NVIDIA settings:

Yep I knew that and my computer is automatically choosing the most appropriate one according to him.
I think I can choose myself which one should be used for subnautica in the control panel of nvidia.
In the section "Manage the 3D parameters" I have a tab named "Settings of program" where I can choose subnautica. It allows me to choose the "graphic processor" (translated from french) I don't think that's the same thing as graphic card actually. Am I at least at the good place to choose the graphic card ? :D

If this is the NVIDIA Control Panel, we're talking about. It has in the English version a tab called Manage 3D settings, with tabs in there called "Global Settings" and "Program Settings".
I think something got lost in your translation from French to English ;)

In that second tab, you can link to Subnautica.exe and force it to use your NVIDIA 830M

This is what it looks like, just to be sure your not in the Intel/Windows settings

I was exactly on this tab !
Mine is slightly different however... You only have 2 points while I have 3.
The 2nd one is allowing me to choose the "graphic processor"

If that's the same thing as graphic card it says that he already choose my nvidia 830M card...

Heh yeah, I'm kinda confused why I only have two points. Some programs I need to force using profiles to not use my Intel HD 3000, instead of my NVIDIA GTX1080. I would love a checkbox to force everything to use my GTX :D (side note, I'm using Intel Quicksync and NVENC to be able to use two separate recordings chips in OBS)

Hmm, well let's see if Subnautica is indeed using your 830M... Try this app: https://www.techpowerup.com/download/gpu-z/

Make sure you've got your NVIDIA 830 selected at the very bottom of this program and then hop on the "Sensors" tab. Start up Subnautica and have a look at "GPU Load" is actually going towards the 100% while playing. If not, change the selected graphics card at the bottom of GPU-Z to your Intel HD5500 and keep an eye on the same "GPU Load" on the Sensors tab.

This way you can be certain of which GPU is being used...

Well I don't know what happend but the game is running correctly since this evening :D
GPU-Z shows that my GPU is at 100% with the nvidia card so the right one is used !

Thanks for your help I maybe changed somethings by searching differents things with you :)
    Have a nice evening !

Just a last question for the moment, should I update the drivers of my graphics card ? These are 2 years old right now... Is it really important ?

Hehe, great to hear it's now running correctly again. It probably was using the integrated Intel card, especially now that it's somehow "fixed" I'm sure that Intel chip was claiming to be the boss over the NVIDIA :D

I used to have an ATI HD5870, which was quite a capable card only really lacking in memory, with just 1Gb. AMD drivers tend to inform you about the best driver version for your card. I'm not entirely sure if NVIDIA does the same thing as I've upgraded to an EVGA GTX1080, which is still among the "latest and greatest", so to speak... But you can check here on their page regardless:

I know that on the xbox edition the game has taken a pretty hard hit in terms of fps due to the latest update. The overall stability seems intact, it just needs another painful round of optimizations.
