I've had this idea since February. I've been thinking about it for so long.
To build tracks, you will need a track builder tool. You can unlock it by scanning a data terminal thing inside of a new room in the aurora called the Train Bay.
You need a titanium ingot, a battery, and some of that silicone stuff.
Track Blueprints
First of all, you start out with...

Some recipes are...
All normal tracks - 2 titanium
Glass tracks - 1 titanium, 1 glass
Reinforced - 1 titanium, 1 lithium
Speed / Slow - 1 magnetite, 1 titanium
Ultra-Resistant - 1 lithium, 1 magnetite, 1 kyanite
Both types of train stations - 2 plasteel bars, 1 lubricant, 2 glass.
The recipe for cargo and passenger trains are 2 plasteel bars, 1 lubricant, and 2 glass.
Both train stations have a UI that you can use to build trains.
Train Stations must be attached to a powered base. They use a bit more power than a water purifier.
Cargo Trains
Cargo trains store items and move quicker. The items are deposited into the train station.
Cargo Train Engine - 1 engine pulls up to 3 carts. 1 wiring kit, 2 titanium bars, 1 lubricant
Cargo Train Hopper - Stores many small items. 1 titanium ingot, 2 lead
Cargo Train Boxcar - Stores a few large items. 1 titanium ingot, 2 magnetite
Cargo Train Tank - Stores large amounts of food, water, and lubricant. 2 titanium ingots, 1 lubricant
Flatcar - Can hold large items and small vehicles. 1 titanium ingot, 1 magnetite
Passenger Trains
Passenger Trains hold the player and some small fish. They are a bit slower.
Passenger Train Engine - Each one pulls up to 5 carts. 2 titanium bars, 1 wiring kit
Small Cart - 2 titanium bars.
Large Cart - 2 plasteel bars.
Empty Cart - Can have things built inside. 2 titanium bars
Dangers
This train isn't 100% safe.
Some small hostile fauna such as sandsharks and stalkers will sometimes bump into the glass. It will create small cracks. The cracks will get bigger overtime and water will slowly drip in.
Reapers, if aggravated, will attack the tracks. They will chase the train.
Ghost leviathans will bite it repeatedly until it breaks or the train leaves its sight.
Sea Dragons will "hit" the track with their hands. This will make it flood. The may also crack the tracks, so the train goes into the open ocean. The Sea Dragon may even swallow the train.

What's this from?
Also, why would you want a monorail if you could just set up a series of underground tubes which generate the precursor tractor beam field thing and which you can just zoom through in a little pod like in futurama.
If you were to just pretend that it goes underground, then you'd have a good alternative to teleporters.
