Actually, I had a similar idea which would really work for the game and keep it balanced.
A piece of technology could be implemented - A Dehydrator/Juicer.
Similar to how curing fish ups their food but bottoms out their water to keep preserved, a dehydrator function would create "preserved <whatever>" allowing it to be kept but not offer much water. Similarly, the same device could also have the opposite function. It's hard to find water in the game at times. The juicer function would be a very welcome addition to the tech. The juicer would do the opposite of the dehydrator, creating "<whatever> juice", which would have high water but low food content. Juices also keep well due to sugar content.
Not a bad idea. I'd like to see some way of taking advantage of all that water around you:
Portable Water Purifier - a single bottle you collect sea water into and automatically filters the water giving something like 16oz. of drinkable water.
Yeah that would work. Basically a battery-powered water filter bottle. You could use the tool to drink slowly from surrounding water at the cost of electricity.
