Help -- Setting Server Up...

Not trying to spam, I promise!
After looking through all the deferent forum descriptions, I decided that this might be the best place to ask, since most of the people posting seem to know what they're doing.

Here's the situation: I've never set up a server before, and I have an entire computer to dedicate to the server. I got the Server files, etc. etc. Went through all the console/hlds commands, okay. Got the HLDS up and running, okay.

The problem: For some reason, I can't admin myself, even though I set ' mp_serverop "wonid#" ' to the correct number (my WONID). Others also can't connect to the server. I even tried using the "auth" command when connecting to the server.

Anybody willing to help me out?

Sounds like its being setup like LAN server (so your WONID becomes the default LAN WONID). You might want to review the stickied topics above to ensure you setup your Internet HL server right.

Well, I did check all the stickies out, but they don't contain anything helpful about actually setting up a server. Just seems like mostly tweaks and stuff...

But yeah, my wonid is 10 characters long -- should it have that many?

You definately have it setup for LAN then.

Make sure you set sv_lan 0 in the server.cfg. I believe there is also another LAN variable to disable. What command line are you using to start the server?

Yeah, sv_lan IS set to "1". To start testing the server and stuff, I've just been opening Natural Selection > Internet Games > Create Server > etc...

(In other words, I don't know the command line to add to my shortcut...heh.)

My command line (icon on the win2k desktop) is:

    c:/...../half-life/hlds.exe -port 27016 -game ns +map ns_{whatever} -maxplayers 16 -heapsize 64000

I'd recommend for the minute (unless you want to learn about it) not installing any metamod/adminmods to your server, at least until you have it up and running.
NB I have maxplayers 16, but I have 4 reserved slots in adminmod, so the server typically has 12-14 people on, sometimes more and it runs pretty smoothly.

The advantages of metamod/adminmod plugins are:
    1) *easy* administration
    2) exploit fixes/support from the community is very strong
    3) easy to set up other admins and control how much access they have
    4) more secure than letting other people know the rcon password

    disadvantages for you:
    1) non-familiarity with the system leading to difficulty in de-bugging
    2) set up is pretty complex to get it how you like it.

Worth the time and effort in the long run, especially if this server is going to be public most of the time.

hope this helps, I'm sure others will have much better command lines, but mine does nicely for my server (and it's finally stable woot )

Actually, I just added AdminMod and MetaMod to the server after I figured out it was set to LAN. It wasn't all that hard to get used to -- the Readme and Help file was really useful for setting the mods up.

I'm still having one problem though -- people can't connect to the server! Any idea what's up with it?

need more information... can people see the server but get dropped during connection? or they can't find it to log into it? still sounds like a network/router issue... what kind of network is this box sitting on?
