This reduction is hardly going to be noticed, or even make a difference half the time.
In my opinion it should block say 75% of bullets at the very max. Make the lerk become support, not a complete offensive alien.
I don't think flayra has got to the stage of 'fine tweaking' the balance stats yet. So what exactly was the point in this?

Most people who don't Lerk a lot don't seem to realise that spike shooter ISN'T it's primary attack method.

When GLs aren't available, this is the best method of killing the lerk. I'd much rather die trying to stab the little bugger than get acid-spammed to death while pumping a largely ineffective leadstorm into him.
I get this from a pistol fired at me at point blank, while I was a fade in umbra. It actually hit me alot (4/10) of times. Needless to say I was quite surprised. But I like the new change. Umbra was a bit much before.

Well when something can give a 700HP fade (with cara3) technically 4* more health with only the expensive GL as a deterant (which never works as a tactic on publics), yes, theres a reasonbly big balance flaw.
Take umbra down to less than 3/4, and I would take a fade/fade combo over fade/lerk.3/4 is exactly right, from my exp on 1.04 servers. Before, it was too overpowered.
And Defcon, the marines are morons if they just go for the fade. There's a reason the lerk has relatively little health <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->.
As for what the umbra blocking actually is, as I understand, 1.03 is 6 out of 7 (85%) and in 1.04 it will be 5 out of 6 (83%). Where does the 75% amount come from? If it is 83% instead of 85%, I agree that this isn't even news...but if it were to go down from 85% to 75% that just might be noticable. Whether it is good or not depends on your interpretation of the lerk's role in the game...which is a completely different discussion.

In later versions (was it 1.04e?) and onward it is 3 out or 4, not 5 out of 6.

Actually, my Lerk umbra experience in 1.04h has been that it has lost a noticable amount of potency. I feel like it's alot more luck based. Sometimes I block all the bullets, sometimes I block barely any. Better to rely on speed and range to compensate for the Lerk's pathetic durability.
