Marines go for hive , aliens go for hive
marines secure hive, aliens have 2 hives
Aleins go fade and lerk, Marines head for 2nd hive
Marines get whopped, Aliens kill marine held hive,
Aliens go Onos
Rines loose..

ok, maybe sometimes it differs and the rines get two hives! ...but not really

Im kinda getting sick of the ol' " ruitien (sp) " so to speak
My friends and I at a lan tryed several new ways, such as Rines go for as many rez as possible, get heavy armor , hmgs, and grens, and we totaly owned, ( 14 people )

To me its kind of getting old, i wish commanders wouldnt always say " ok, everyone head to the hive, were going to " secure " it .. "

I dunno, maybe im wrong. maybe im just in alot of crappy games heh, anyways..yeah, post what you think i guess..

I've played since the first beta and one thing I've noticed is that the tactics evolve with each new patch. At first no one would take the alien hive, instead just build a LOT of turrets everywhere. New players wouldn't remember this but Turrets cost 15 res and there were a ton of em in every game. I actually remember being called a n00b commander for NOT building a TF and 20-30 Turrets at the Spawn and instead an Obs and PG.

Anyway, NS is very similar to evolution in that we keep on finding new and better ways to do things. Gameplay might be getting a little similar in each game, but its been a while since a patch has been released, and remember this is still 1.0x not 1.x0 or x.00, its still beta, have a lot of patience.

Actualy there are 3 possibilitys for a NS game

    1) the one you just described

    2) Marines grab two hives, and turret crawl thier way to the last one

    3) Marines grab two hives and somehow the skulks take one back and win

I would say #2 is most common (in large servers like the ones i play in) and then #1 and then #3.

    Its just you ;P

I think now that 1.04 has been released we will see a whole lot of new strats popping up. A res tower rush seems like a good idea in the new patch since phasegates have been toned down and imo u need to get turrets up at ur phasegates now for protection since a skulk can destroy a phasegate quite easily now.

well, you see, there are a vast number of strategies one can take when playing NS ...

its a shame that the one you all choose to play the on that is typically the quickest ...

because after all, "If it works, why change it" "If it aint broke, dont fix it" "blah blah blah blah blah"

you have no one but your selves to blame. If your tired of it, go gorge and build something new. Perhaps a Sensory first - god forbid.

Go commander and try securing all the nodes in the map before you go after a hive. Hell, do a CC rush.

    Try anything new.

Unfortunatly, no one will listen (like usual) and I dont know why I even bother spending the time to respond to these ...

perhaps I just want to retain my title

two other strats ive seen used well is marines rush to the aliens main hive and build ips or pg and just spawn camp the skulks while a few marien shoot the hive. Makes for a short game. Other strat is marines get possibly 2 res and go for hmgs fast as possible. Then moving as a group they can just chew through any hive.

Yea, i get you man, 90% of the time i just want to mess around like that, but the problem is, people want to win ...

Play NS at a lan with people you know, MAD fun.

    we did:
Gorge rush: ( all went gorge and health sprayed in massis and OWNED all the marines in there base)
    - lost - *no res to make anything at the hive so they owned it, also gorges SUCK at killing structures, so eventualy we died (rines respawned alot )

Marines: Made about 10 spawn portals, and continued to make them along with comand chairs all over the map, so when we died, god knows where we would respawn and start bulding up..
-won!- *they had no idea where we were 90% of the time no matter if they killed the CC and the spawnportal LOL( attacked the hive ) - probem -, takes ALOT of resource, did this after we did a resource rush-

well, tahts just a sample of strange things to do, oh!, we also figured out a way to distract the turrets while another skull ate it, .. just going to say takes 2 gorges and a few skulks

heh, well anyways, i think people should have more fun with the game, well atually no i dont, think people should just play for fun instead of playing to win...unless winning is fun? which i guess it is.. so nevermind :O...frick, i countradicted myself like 200 times..

That's why I do different things as a Comm. Like Relocate to a hive, and let them get fades. The Alamo scenario is actually quite fun. Best hive so far to relocate to: Subspace. Aka "The Alamo"

If I go gorge and place a sensory or movement first what do you think my team will say to me. I want to try this as a test and not use comm or write back to them.

Most likely I will get a handful of cuswords, accusations, "Noob", "omg", loud mic yelling.

Anyway I agree that doing things different is sometimes much funner but sadly peer pressure has a hold of NS. And even if I did put sensory first, we are most likely to lose just from the fact that everyone will be complaining about me than playing the game. And then aliens will lose and then everyone on my team will blame me alone for tryignt o be different and and... you get the point.

alright, ignore my advice and just do the same thing you always do and play the same game you always play - I'm just tired of seeing these "Omg - NS is soooo old now" - "OMG NS N3V4R H45 N3W G4M3Pl4y!!!11oneoneone" etc ...

if you dont try anything new, it will always be the same game. Funny that concept eh?

And its not like I'm saying Sensory first is your only other option, use your imagination and try something new...

anything ... see how it works - if you lose, you lose - oh well, its a game. Learn from it and try something better the next game.

Reminds me of the scenario in Enders Game. No one wanted to change tactics from formations so when Ender changed he owned.

and EVERYONE is set in their ways. No one likes to lose, explains why alotta people F4 if it goes bad.

Remember, the enemy's hive is just your friendly skulk spawn.

When I try unique strategies as commander, marines don't follow orders and later complain I'm a bad commander. They sit around and act like the game is playing out like all other games despite what I tell them to do and the strategy I'm taking. So, say I'm doing a command relocation at the beginning of the game, I waypoint everyone to hive and they all sit there waiting for the IPs to spawn. gah...

I really, really, really feel your pain, Silver. I was commander for one game where hardly a minute passed without someone trying to boot me from the chair. Why? Because I was focusing on passive upgrades first and didn't rush HA/HMG or do a phase rush on any hives. We took a hive and set up some defenses, took reactor room for the dual nodes, and I kept the resources pumping into the arms lab while the troops kept the aliens busy. And we won, quite handily, because passive upgrades 0wnz0rz and because the troops were all very good. But every minute or two I'd see the 'A vote has started to kick the commander' message pop up. (Especially around times when I'd be joking with the players I knew over voice comm with, "What, you expect me to GIVE you stuff?!" Can't really blame 'em for trying to kick me at those points, of course, but I was doing my best to explain the strategy to everyone.) Thankfully the vote never passed, the upgrades finished, I dropped the goodies, and the troops steamrolled the last hive under the might of level 3 weapons and armor.

It's just a flaw in the 'win at all costs' mentality that pervades so many games these days. Fun, and sometimes fairness, are being left by the wayside.

Had a very fun game with part turtling a hive, part res hoarding. Was quite exhilerating, we didnt get owned by fades 10 minutes into the game, nor did we possess 2 hives so that the aliens vere essentially crippled. We lost in the end, but only after a GREAT game where battles where fought in many areas and not just the boring "Hive battle".
