So, it's Marines vs Aliens.
Rather, you could ask how many things is Xcom 'influenced' (read: Stolen) from?
(hint : Try dropping by google, and typing in Majestic 12. That should keep you busy for a while.) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
wow you totally get flamed for posting anything. I was just curious if x-com was an influence in the creation of this mod...well you caught me I was really looking for a medal. idiot. Yes, I know all about majestic 12, and what x-com is taken from. However, xcom was a very popular game for a while and is still one of the best on my and many other lists. So, since it is so well known chances are it might have had an influence. In this case, no. A simple yes, or no would have done just fine. Congrats to shrike for his excellent post! I dont see why the rest of you have this burning desire to post crap like im trying to attack your mod.
Looking at the game there seem to be a lot of other games that have influenced NS. From what i can see the biggest influences come from Aliens v Predator and Starcraft.

But tbh they've pulled off something unique. Every creation is built on the the work of others:
<i>"If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants."</i> scientist Sir Isaac Newton,
I have to say that X-Com is NOTHING like NS. None of the aliens are remotely similar to aliens in NS, and the missions take place on earth, in open areas, rather than on spaceships and installations. I feel sorry for anyone who has not played X-Com. You are missing out BIG TIME.
The year is "1999" *snicker*, and aliens are invading Earth. You are the force to fight them. You lay a base somewhere in the world, and wait for aliens to appear. When a UFO is sighted, you can attempt to intercept it and shoot it down. When/if a UFO crashes/lands, you can send out a recovery mission. This is where the real game starts. You land and get a view sort of like Jagged Alliance games. You try to kill/capture all the aliens in the area to finish the mission, recovering important alien artifacts and weapons. From there, you have to research new weapons, armor, fightercraft, and base defense systems. Taking on some of the later aliens is just not fun unless you have heavy weapons and armor. Eventually, you have to capture alien leaders in order to interrogate them, and be able to embark on the final trip to Mars, where you are supposed to kill the alien "brain".
X-Com IS the best game I have ever played, and it came out in 1991. I have played it on and off ever since I got it, and if you have a slow computer, I would highly reccomend buying it.
This thread makes me cry for all my squaddies that were shot by their crosseyed shipmates two seconds after they stepped off the ramp and spotted their first alien.

Or, if you noticed the SHAMELESS bug in it, you researched psi-amps, had one dude, in HA, and never lost. Ever. Because you could just possess each alien, then get him to set & drop a grenade at his own feet.
Hmmm. I just preferred guys in flying power suits who could auto-shot heavy plasma through windows halfway across the map <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well, the idea was you couldn't access the aliens' inventory, but you could. By selecting the inv of one of your own troops, and pressing the next & previous marine buttons, you suddenly got a 'marine' called 'Snakeman' (or whatever) which you could do whatever you liked with. Dropping all their weaponry (as there was no AI for picking up new ones) was my favourite, just don't do it to the psychic ones. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

TFTD was insanely hard. They really upped the difficulty since almost ALL the encounters were in the deep sea, meaning visibility was crap and aliens had a hundred and one places to find cover from. Of course, i could never shake off the sight of a lobsterman at ground zero of one of those guided missiles and still be standing. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

Sure, you can abuse the game, but playing it to have fun is another matter entirely. What you say is like saying that C&C Tiberium Dawn is bad because you can wall enemies in with sandbags, and they will do nothing to stop you.
Ohh ohh... Remeber the blaster launchers? Wow, those were FUN. I wish the graphis were good enough to show the surprise on the alien's face when the bomb loops around him a couple of times before slamming into his head... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Another fun thing to do if you have tons of money is to just recruit a full avenger load of recruits, load em all up with a blaster pistol each, and just charge into any encounter you find. Even though you suffer 50%+ casualties, it does not matter, as you can just sell all the stuff you get and stay abover budget. Taking on an ethereal battleship with a bunch of recruits is just scary. Remember weak-minded fools will get shot... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
ah I played all those x-coms... good memories... too bad most of the time I haxed it by saving after every turn
TFTD <i>was</i> much harder. It had additional weapon restrictions. (torpedos don't work above water etc) Additional missions. (hyper wave emmissions detected or whatever those were called.) Harder enemies sooner, lobster men and tasoth. Nothing sucks quite as much as your third or fourth terror mission being a lobster man or tasoth... unless it's on an ocean liner and you have to do it <i>twice</i>, once above deck and once below.
Then there were the alien bases in TFTD... most were too deep to get to... and once you did.. they were 6x6 area and 4 levels deep! (compared to UFOD which was 5x5 and 2 levels) I did one base mission in TFTD in my life. It was a lobster man base. I couldn't find all the **** in that damn gigantic base so I ended up stunning the commander and carrying him out by hand.
Now if you want <i>really good</i> fun you play apocalypse. mmmm devastator cannons... toxiguns.... personal shields... boomeroids....disruptor armor... tasty tasty
The best cheese on Apocalypse was this though. If you play on hard mode, eventually you get access to an extra technology, personal teleporters. For half your base time units you can go anywhere. I could clear out an entire mothership in one turn with these. Teleport inside, toxigun, teleport another inside a little further, toxigun, etc etc etc ehehe i loved doing that, it was way up therre with mind controling everyone in one of the other two x-coms and having them all kill eachother
and on a side note... has anyone here ever played xcom alliance? did that even come out? is it good?
I would like to say the turn based combat in NS is amazing. Now to research laser rifles and personal armor so the floaters can't kill my troops in one shot. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
