<div class="IPBDescription">Why do admins hate 56K'rs?</div> This is happing alot lately:

BOZO <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> Frank

Frank: BOZO you cheeter!
BOZO: I dont cheet.
Frank: Yes you do, look at his ping! (so naturly everybody dose).
Frank: Kick Him!
Admin: BOZO you F***** lamma, leave! you are F****** up the whole server you sh**.

And this behavior is copied by all players on the server.

I have gotten by ping down from +-500 to +-350 with some apps I download. My ping dosent really affect
the server, Just me. Here are a link on a study of Vlave's net code:

<a href='http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/halflife/' target='_blank'>http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/halflife/</a>

I dont mind leaving if the admin asks nicly, I even thank him for letting me play on there server. I just dont see why people have to resort to rude behavior to get there point accross.

On the side... Are there any 56K only servers? GameWarriors hase one for CS. And are there any nice admins who dont mind at leest one High-Pinger on there server?

I don't mind 56kers on the server as long as you don't mind LPBs. Many players playing online games today have a low pinging broadband connection and I'm not going to keep them out with a 56k only server. I feel bad if DSL or cable isn't avaiable in your area; it can be hard to compete nowadays without a nice low ping connection.

I have several 56k regulars which play on my server daily, it's really up to you what you want to do. Your welcome to play on my server just as long as I don't hear you complaining about the "lag" because you are on dial-up.

They do this mostly because of ignorance is my guess. Just ignore them and move on.

i have no problem with 56kers either. usually.....

Its the "laggers" i have a problem with....you know...they guys who disappear then kill you?? if it gives them an unfair advantage it becomes a problem. but if your lag is relativily low, then there usually isn't a problem.

But its the ones who jump all other the screen are the ones who ruin the game for everyone else.

they are usually un-aware of this as well which is a problem too because you have to explain it.

My only problem is with people with like 2000 ping, especially when they command. They seem to fly around the map.

    2000 Ping and fly around?

    Dunno what you are talking about <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

With my leet 26.4 modem connection, If I ping above 1000 I can't even MOVE!

what i was talking about is thier Insane packetloss....yeah they may have a 350ms ping...but the PL is crazy, causing the effect of "flying around".

btw, you ppl are low.. "ip in sig" plz....how low will you go to get players? honestly.

I have no problem with 56krs...i get alot of them...the only problem i have is when thier PL is so high that we can't play the game with them

Dude, I know the pain all too well of being a modem player (hell, I was limited to 26.4k cuz of my crappy lines out where I live). I'm on DSL now, but paying 100 bucks a month for IDSL now.. yes I know it's a rip off but I can't live without it!

Anyways dude, I know there are tons of servers out there that totally welcome 56kers or players from all types of connections. My server (ns.grapesoda.org:7777) is one of em.

When you run into nubs that say URE LAGIN TEH HOLE SERVER!!!1, just blow them off. If they start harassing you, don't play on their server, and find a better one. There are lots of em around.
  • JebJeb Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11616Members
agreed, the problem with dial up users is that they can start to jump around. So your shooting at where you think they are, and they are somewhere else...

As long as the connection allows you to play, and others to play against you, then it shouldn't be a problem. As far as people thinking high pingers lag their servers, that shoudln't be a problem anymore. Most games have fixed the netcode so that it doesn't matter what the ping is... (I still hear cs players complain about this, but I know that it has been addressed long ago.)

Many people say that high-ping players lag the server. Personally I think this is something of a myth--I've never seen any technical references to how HL netcode causes the server to have exhhorbitant problems with high-ping players. It pisses me off when people keep saying "Kick the high pinger, he's lagging the server" when realistically they are probably using LESS bandwidth.

The arguement: "They warp around, they have an advantage" is so one-sided... I keep explaining to people that the people who appear to 'warp' have it even worse--to them, it's likely that they see everyone else as warping around.

If high ping (not high packetloss) players DO lag the Half Life server setup, can someone please point me toward technical details to that effect? Because it seems like everyone believes it but nobody can say why.
  • agentpropagentprop Join Date: 2002-11-16 Member: 8961Members
I can agree with Terr here. The technical specifications would show that higher bandwidth people would lag the server more than low bandwidth (laggy) people.
Example: The server has a bandwidth of 10 and 5 open player slots.
This allows an optimum of 2 bandwidth per player.

Lets assume a broadband player of bandwidth 4 arrives.
That leaves 6 bandwidth for 4 slots.
Lets assume another broadband player of bandwidth 4 arrives.
That leaves 2 bandwidth for 3 slots.

    Lets reset the same server.
Lets assume a 56ker of bandwidth 1 arrives.
That leaves 9 bandwidth for 4 slots.
Lets assume another 56ker of bandwidth 1 arrives.
That leaves 8 bandwidth for 3 slots.

You see the difference? Ping doesnt actually make much difference, its all about bandwidth. (As far as the information I'm using goes)
  • JebJeb Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11616Members
    your right.

That is part of the reason for things like sv_maxrate 8000 in CS. The maxrate only allow any one player to recieve data at 8000 units (i forget what that unit is) (that is not default btw, they are what I use on my server.)

That way a single high bandwidth player doesn't suck up all the bandwidth.

There was a problem in older games, I think games like quake2 maybe, that high pingers did cause server lag, but from what I have read and seen over the last 3 years is that that issue was resolved long ago...

the thing about dial up users that are lagged badly is that its no fun trying to shoot them, and they can't hit anything anyways, so they should really look for a server that they ping better to.
  • eagleceaglec Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9948Members, Constellation
I think the admins have been mis-informed that high ping players cause lag. I had in the past believed this information but in the last couple of years have seen nothing to support it and see no technical reason why it should be the case. Although often the symtoms of choke can be cured by kicking the highest pinger this is curing the symtom not the cause.

My server is probably the lowest bandwidth server in the world that can support 16 players without excessive lag and is probably ideal for 56k players because of this.

As my servers sv_maxrate is set to 2000 even a 56k users should be able to keep up but broadband users such as me and my friends also get a good game.

My server does not run 24/7 but it's often running at the weekend.

    you find game play ok at 2000?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

My cs server is set to min of 3000 per player, and max of 8000. If I set my rate too low, I usually get lots of choke and/or loss.

(of course bandwidth isn't an issue with the server as I work for an isp and its off our server network)

Another question, what happens when someone joins with their rate at 10000 or even 8000? (9999 is an auto setting as far as I know)
They should get a fair amount of choke as they are trying to request data faster then the server will give it out...
