New Engine For Ns?

<div class="IPBDescription">engine for NS</div> Hi, i was just thinking the other day. Since the HL engine is so old and it's code is open source (really old), is there a chance that this mod will be switched over to a different engine like UT2K3 or Doom 3 (wishfull thinking). Just think of the atmosphere and the textures that this new engine would provide. As soon as you can make a mod for either of these engines a great effort should be made to convert this great mod to a new engine. Just my thoughts on the subject.

It's been discussed. NS is not moving. The HL engine is the only engine that supports this much customizability that I am aware of, and the playerbase is bigger than any other game. The only engine that NS will be moving to is the Half-Life 2 engine, if Half-Life 2 ever comes out.

what if there was an engine whose programming team offered to do all of the mod's code themselves and change their engine to accomodate almost all the features Flayra wanted, and the NS team just had to give them data files?

    Well wouldn't that tickle them pink...<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

I don't believe such a beast exists yet, however. And besides, the HL engine is working very well. It looks good (for once), still plays well, has very few bugs in itself, and is HUGE as far as playerbase. There is no reason to change until something bigger and better comes along.

I KNOW LETS ALL REPROGRAM THE GAME FROM SCRATCH TO SATISFY THE TEN PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY'RE TOO GOOD FOR HL AND ALIENATE A LOT OF THE PLAYER BASE.

i think it would be so much easier for the people who make an engine to also make the code for the mods rather than 3rd party mod coders. it would be in their interest to do it also.

    ahhh, idealism.

Vipr, this has been discussed to death. NS is not moving in any foreseeable future.

Half-Life has great mod support, very customizable code, the engine might look fugly but it still runs great on old machines, and it took them two or more years to get NS done just for Half-Life, with a wide coding database already available. Imagine how long for a fresh game would take to code NS into.

Plus the playerbase is immense. It has nearly 4x the amount of players then the other top 9 online (FPS) games online at any given moment.

It would be interesting if a new engine came out, that also had support for Half-Life mods. You would basically be able to steal a huge base of players, who would probably enjoy playing their favourite mod with nicer graphics.

I'd love to play Natural Selection with the Unreal Warfare engine, or Doom3 engine. How badassw ould that be??

am i missing something"? Halflife engine being open source? woah. oh well. i think NS looks great for the halflife engine, best looking mod ive ever seen infact for halflife but on another note i think Sierra/valve/gearbox or whoever works on that stuff now *i think valve* needs to release a new pack for an open mod based game. just a base for mods and include mods like cs, dod, tfc, etc but with upgraded graphics that would work on the new game base... i think this would be a great idea for them........but thats my thoughts. if they make a real stable , great looking, and plays well on most machines i would shell out 80 dollars for such a thing! ...

Why would they port it to another engine and lose their player base?
  • airyKairyK Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11126Members
it wouldnt be a new engine in my idea but an updated engine that can be used both ways btw this topic has been beaten down too much........time to lose these ut2k3 or d00m3 r0x0rs engine is better crap

I was under the impression that the developers had made it abundantly clear that they picked Half Life for several reasons and do not plan to port NS to anything else in the concievable future.

i want to have a go with porting NS to a very sophisticated engine that requires a GeForce FX or better. if Flayra doesn't like it in the end then no problem because i can just use almost all the code for my own project. it will be good practice for me. i don't need any code from Flayra i just need some graphic files. it will be ready hopefully by the time everyone has good enough equipment to play it and if not then the idea is to make it so good that people would gladly pay a lot for the equipment in order to play it.

on a more realistic side note...

This is one of those topics where I can't help but think that those who understand--do. Those who don't--suggest.

Just remember that the NS team has copyright, trademark, and licenses... And I'm sure any unofficial illegal NS ports would be flamed mercilessly.

i can see a clone of NS appearing in future games, simply because it has a good basic idea, but dont expect this dev team to put another year of effort just to make the same exact product look nicer.

some people i know made a full fledged first person rpg out of the tribes 1 engine, and it still has about ten servers, they have been trying to port it into t2 for over a year, changing code is simple enough but then building the maps and recreating all of the models in different higher quality formats simply takes a ****load of effort and skill and time (time is what amateur developers simply do not have)

learn to make your halflife look nicer through graphics options and dont expect a new project.

The half life engine and Ut2k3 engine use different kinds of model files.
Different way of mapping and different way of coding. The difference is huge.

If you manage to make a NS clone on UT2k3, do let us know, but I guess it is going to be a while before we hear from you.

Technically speaking, the unreal engine is better than the half life engine.

i want to try to port NS to an engine that can do diffuse, specular, gloss, and bump maps and maybe more. ut2003 can't do all those btw.

Now that is actually a good idea.

I could see this hitting HUGE, since people would have a new engine while keeping the old one. Graphics & physics would perhaps change for the better, but not much else in this case...'cept the money in your wallet would drop by $40-50 hehe.

*sigh* NS will not be moved...simply because of so many factors, and any attempt to copy it can be viewed as illegal, not to mention you'd have to find coders, mappers, modelers, animators and legal people and pimps (Msr. Evil comes to mind).
  • KitsuneKitsune Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7843Members
Well, start saving those pennies, then. Flayra did say he'd entertain any investors willing to foot the bill for developing a full-blown NS retail release. So, following that statement, all you need to do is come up with a million or two, and you'll get NS on another engine. But, if it's any help, tell the bank that I'd be willing to buy it if it hit the shelves. I'm sure that'll definitely get them to give you the loan.

has anyone got some models lying around that use diffuse, specular, gloss, and bump maps? i cannot find any free models on the internet that have all those. i want to see if some modellers and my engine can do a good job with that.
