<div class="IPBDescription">A pseudo-poll</div> I've been reading a bit (really!) and I think we're confused. Here's my pseudo-poll:
Is NS closer to:
a) Starcraft: squad tactics
b) Warhammer 40K: space marines vs gene stealers
c) Aliens (the movie): marines vs infestation
d) Team Fortress <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Knowing what we're trying to achieve would probably help decide what suggestions are most relevant. For example, a marine exoskeleton with a chainsaw arm is quite applicable if we use a W40K theme but not in a Starcraft theme.
Is the focus on the players or on their structures (W40K vs Starcraft)? Should there be objectives for the marines (like turning on the ships generator or air filter) ("Aliens")? Can we introduce flamethrowers for the marines?
Just curious.

if this is team fortress, then the marines would never win.
NS is clearly don'tsue nothing like don'tsue the fine products of don'tsue 20th Century Fox don'tsue.

Don't short-change either of the NS "spellcasters". ;-)
blizzard = kiddyized crap made by marketing teams
ns = not crap
ns = ns
this concludes our math lesson for the day.
Stop trying to compare it.
And another point. How about we take the suggestions which are closest to a NATURAL SELECTION THEME!
Cept for the fact that there are aliens VS. marines which is used less and less nowadays <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Oh and NS is like all of them and none of them at the same time. Its its own creation, and thus deserves to be taken in its own stead, rather than be compared to be like this more than others.
(Is this the right forum? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
That is what makes it unique.
It feels and plays a lot like team DM as an early alien.
It feels and plays like CS/TF as a frontline marine.
It feels and plays Starcraft at a strategic team level, and as a commander.
It often feels like AvP or a movie from any of these perspectives and some of the others not mentioned at various times.
It is the first truly sucesfull blend of the most powerful and effective PC gaming genres.
THAT is what NS is.

The wise speak only of that which they know.
A witless worm you have become... -- JRR Tolkien
Blizzard are far from perfect, but they are the closest to perfection any game company has ever been.
They have never released a bad title.
They have never released a flop.
They have undeniably revolutionised gaming in many areas and ways, even if you are unfortunate enough to have no strategy skill or appreciation of accessable fun and so don't like any of their games.
The diablo series is recognised as one of the funnest and most popular gaming franchises ever.
Warcraft and its sequel pioneered many things in gaming, one of a few select games that can really accept such an accolade, but also remains a brilliant work in its own right.
SC: Ghost and War3 have yet to prove themselves against their bretheren, but they are already succeses (ghost before it is even released), and I wait with interest and no small hope to see where they will go.
Starcraft is acknowledged both by players, designers and historians as the best electronic strategic mutiplayer game ever to exist. It is also as close to perfection as a creation of its compexity could concievably be.
If NS can live up to its standard, it will be the *greatest online game* in history.
but the only thing plays like it is AvP but it was much more like dm then fps rts
doesn't matter where the idea is from it's never the less a great game by all means
oh yeah one other thing blizzard is as good as u can get as real life game company(ofcourse long way to go from idealy good)
By the way, I'd like to quote Flayra on the topic of Star Craft:
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Best. Game. Ever.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Make of that what you will.

Team Fortress smells of wee, and NS doesn't.
NS is closer to:
Flayras imagination, which is fed by everything he has ever seen, heard or thought about, most likley including all of the quoted titles.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Influences include Starcraft ™, Aliens ™, Advanced Space Crusade ™ and Gloom ™<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Relax, works of art are allowed to be similar. NS doesn't have to be "just NS" to be a fulfilling experience. I think comparisons to other genres and works is beneficial - you can see where certain elements work and others don't.
That game offers a lot, even to people who aren't very good at strategy.
When I first played NS I thought immediately of the W40K theme, with the marines vs gene stealers. Two teams, where one side must work together to win (marines) and the other acts randomly and individually (aliens). The upgrades for the humans does give it a kind of Starcraft feel, but no more than any upgrade system would.
The way I see it, the marines are supposed to fear leaving the safety of their base unless in groups or heavily upgraded.
The endgame, with both sides fully upgraded, should be even and difficult with the best strategists winning.
The atmosphere is the same
Breeder = gorge (and they are both cute)
You both have bases defenses etc and objectives is the same stop the other team from spawning
But res is given and you can build to that mark (stops turret spaming)
Hatchie is just an ankle high spider
Drone nothing like it
Wraith close to lurk by flying
Kami = hatchie that can blow up
Stinger bio flame thrower
Guardian my fav campering, cloak able alien
Stalker big and heavily armored as an onos but with an ability to shoot spikes
Humans don’t get commander but have builder class like gorge but is a robot called engineer
Both teams are classes and to upgrade you mast have enough frags to chose that corresponding class
And funny enough it’s a 5 year old and being played it a mod on quake2 (because that was best that was around at the time they started)
Over all NS is unique in it’s own way
But they are the reasons why I say NS is closer to Gloom then all the other you have stated
Other good ones: TIE Fighter, X-Com, Master of Orion 2, so many memories, so many wasted hours.
Edit: Hey ya, NS is a bit like X-Com too. You **** this. NS has taken the story and basis from a lot of obvious influences but the gameplay itself is exceptionally unique.
Anyone remember the "Orcs in space" fiasco? Ya, right...
just with addid resource, and instead of spiders, doglike people
same build structures for aliens n stuff, offense chaimers, and i think there we defense chaimbers, and instead of a hive, you had eggs witch thebuilders made
marines had lazer turrets, but no turret factory etc.
there were the different evolutions of aliens, but it went by how many kills you had not by how many resources.
anyways, NS > Gloom, but thats where alot of inspiration comes from <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
