Do People Have Something Against Winning...

When I say DON'T I really mean DO IT
I wonder if somewhere out there, there is someone who doesn't like winning. Define me another action that is more satisfying than winning a game. Your fighting 8 other skilled opponents and to beat them makes you feel like King ****. Doesn't it?

So when someone lays out a plan that ensures the chance of winning beyond and doubt, one would think you'd take appropriate steps to see this plan into fruition. For common courtesy it is also good to lay out some general guidelines for your fellow team-mates to follow, guidlines such as "Under any circumstances DO NOT ATTACK OR COME NEAR THE CC. I will TELL you when to come attack."

I'd like to think that it's not rocket science to comprehend the above sentence, someone has told you a plan is gonna work, and playing along for a bit to see if the plan is a success or a failure. Obviously a very small part of the general NS gaming populus have trouble understanding the English language...

This tale of woe begins on NS_Hera one late Thursday night on an Australian server with 8 players a side, with myself on Kharaa. The inevitable skulk rush held great importance to my plan as my fellow team mates unwittingly distract the Marines while I sneak up into the Command Console area. Thankfully the commander wasn't much of a defense person and went straight for an Observatory instead of a Turret Factory.
As I sat waiting for my personal resources to creep up to 33 I relayed my plan to the other 7 players, which more or less sounded like the following:
"Guys, I'm up hiding near the CC. DON'T COME AND ATTACK THE CC. I'm planning something."
"When my res gets up, I'll gorge and build some DCs around the CC, then outside I'll build OCs."
"This is gonna take a while, so PLLLLLLLLZ don't attack the CC until I tell you to."
ahhh the wonders of gaming colloqialism... but I digress. Those are some fairly stock standard instructions to follow don't you think? I've used the above strategy numerous times and in ALL instances the Kharaa have won on Hera.

Along comes FroOgle (That capital O makes you like ever so smart) FroOgle likes to eat things. FroOgle likes to kills things. FroOgle likes to come up to the Command Console area and start eating the Command Console while being chased by several marines.

...

"Froogle, PLLLLLLZ go away! They're gonna kill me in a sec" It appeared that was too much of a rhetoric statement. Perhaps something a bit more on Admiral Hyuck Hyucks level.
"F*** OFF FROOGLE!" Alas it was all for naught, 2 marines came up and killed poor Froogle, and in doing so unintentionally killed me as well (Having not moved the entire time they hadn't spotted me) Needless to say I was a little *ahem* 'antsy' with little FroOgle, his charming reply:

"I don't care."

*sigh*

I go off a little at FroOgle, which is to be expected because of how hard it is to reach the Command Console on Hera without being spotted, and carry on with the game. Another opportunity arose in which I once again snuck back up to the Command Console and once again told the Kharaa to not approach the Command Console. Around this point the marines had secured (I think) Reception, Holoroom, and the Archiving Hive. On top of that, they had Advanced Weapons and Jetpacks. With the marines holding a fairly sizeable chunk of Hera and better weapons, the Kharaa's outlook was looking fairly grim. I didn't think I had to tell my team-mates this, as they were being mopped all over the facility.

As luck had it I had reached the 33 personal resources I wanted (You don't need 33, it's just much easier to get started with 33) and was GOING to start my grand scheme of Marine domination when DIFFERENT skulk came flying up the lift shaft and into the Command Console area.

"n3g GO AWAY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! I'M A GORGE WHO IS GONNA BUILD AROUND THE CC! DON'T ATTACK IT!"
The responce "Shut the f*** up newb"

*whir of elevator*
*approaching footsteps*
*BANG*
*dead*
...

Generally I'm a very coherent, understanding individual who tries to .. alter my playing style to suit my team-mates. However, when I've been waiting patiently for 5 minutes, and I have TOLD my team-mates extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemely simple instructions which were disobeyed twice I start to get a little annoyed.

The marines went on to win that round, and I did not feel a bit sorry for my team-mates. With the help of 2 fools they brought this result upon themselves.

Moral of the story; when someone tells you to not do something in a team-orientated game, by gosh you better obey them

[/VENTING]

*sigh* It's games like these that make me want to bang my head against the table.

I get this a lot too, although lately people will listen to me. The best way to avoid this conflict is to play on a few servers regularly where people get to know your name. If you keep doing good things you earn respect and people will most likely listen to what you have to say. Playing on clan servers are nice too because if you cannot take control, a member from the clan most likely will.

Did you use voicecom to tell your teammates that? Not everyone will have sound, and most of the vcoms I hear are very crackly and unclear. It could be that he couldn't make out what you were saying.

No, it was late and using a microphone would wake my parents up. I would then subsequently get yelled at.

    C'est la vie.

    - If a comm's voice is cracky then his teammates will tell him and he should be able to fix it.
    - If the comm cannot fix or just doesn't want to use voice communications, then he should not be commander.
    - If teammate somehow cannot (receive) voice from the comm, they are either newbies or need to get hardware that supports it.
    - If teammates hear a command from the comm, and still refuse to do it, the comm can't do much about it (unless he's an admin). As comm, you may need to explain yourself instead of just barking orders. Sure, that takes time, but these aren't well-trained marines; most are couch-potatoes who see a gun on TV once in a while but thats it. Many people are still learning the game and don't know that this isn't CS and that they need to work together :/
    - If you really want a well oiled team, perhaps you should join a clan and play together with them. Most clans expect teamwork and quickly weed out those without the ability to follow orders.

I wasn't commenting on commanders. I was making an observation about people not following a set of instructions. Voice communication has nothing to do with it.

That happens a lot, it really sucks. You just have to learn to play with it. Usually when I get in to that kind of situations I don't play NS for a week because im so ****.

Jim: He wasn't trying to be "alien commander". He was trying to win the game but some people are just too ignorant to handle simple things you ask from them.

Racer: I don't have a voice com and I still play commander. And I still win a lot. Sometimes a commander without voice com CAN actually be a good commander. I for example type fast and short sentences with lots of facts like: "Ref under attack, go asap" meaning Refinery hive. I can still warn my marines and tell them what I need to through the chat. Do you think I shouldn't be commander only because I don't use Voice com? Should I just stand there next to cc listening to people saying: "Whos com?! Not me! Some one go quickly! We need a com!" In those situations I just have to be commander even without voice com.

Sadly, you ran into n00bs. n00bs can ruin everything. All I can offer you is I feel your pain and reccomend that you try and play on the same servers regularly. Once you develope a relationship with the other regulars, you can over come the dreaded noobs.

Whats even better is when kick vote is enabled on the server. Then those same ppl that dont have a clue as to what you are doing will vote kick you for doing something they dont understand. Being able to spectate ones teammies while dead increases the probabilty that this will happen.

I've NEVER heard non-crackly voice-com, and I play on the Australian servers same as the thread starter. Most of the time it's either a) You cannot understand it or b) Music or some guy humming and singing into his mic. Thankyou forums for teaching me how to mute. A few times yes, you get a good com with a good mic but the problem you ask? He's almost always a clanner and expects the people on the team to know that "Mike" as he calls him, is actually that marine standing next to you. I'm not complaining about voice com or nothing, I just find too many people are using it who have either poor equipment or strange ideas of humour and gameplay. I have had enjoyable experiances with voicecom. Then again Infinitum, I've also been in the same situation as you and was told I was a noob. Go figure

had an experience like that last night myself.. "what, Ochambers everywhere? Why use vents? let's fly over them! Who cares that our comm just expended 68 resources on us, we'll fly through the HARD WAY, cuz we're dumb as ****. Oh shoot, we got webbed. ha ha ha"

Yeah, we lost that round, but killed 3-4 hives (I started doing things myself, #$% idiots.

Sidenote, Dexworld is no longer on my list of servers to play when my regulars are full.

This may be held against me however, there are lots of things more satisfying than winning a game.

I'd rather have a good converstation with a friend then win a game of NS anyday. I'd rather spend time with someone I loved doing most anything then win a game. (No GF as of now though) I'd rather be dancing at a club then winning a game. I'd much rather be DJing at that club then winning a game. I'd rather be a successful musician selling CDs and touring than winning a game.

I could actually think of a lot more but I suppose there is no need. By the way, I really enjoy playing Natural Selection as well as other games which is why I own two computers and an Xbox.

Sadly, they were obviously stupid/labotomised players. And I can feel your pain, I used to try this tactic out many times, only to have some idiot/retard/noob/complete and utter brain donating inbred hicktard that simply cant read or listen otherwise he would have know exactly what I was doing, come and blow my cover. I really hate these people, the sad thing is, they dont seem to see anything wrong with their behaviour (Obviously a diet of CS has numbed the cooperative part of their brain and they no longer can function in a team oriented environment) I really Really REALLY _REALLY_ Hate players like this, simply because they will never improve thier teamplay skills, they will never help to add anything constructive to the NS community but grief, and they will never learn that what they are doing is not only stupid and retarded, but that it really hurts the team when they do things like this.

BTW which server was it, PM me if you want. (I wish to avoid these people as much as possible, they never learn)

    Now for a half-meaningless post...

Something I find about NS (apart from the fact that it is a very cool game ^_^) is that at times it can be mildly frustrating... even if you're on the winning team... and things suddenly stop going smoothly.

I like to win, but it's not always essential to having a great time!! Sure it helps (a lot)... but if having a great time is your goal it pays a great deal more to be a team-player than a competitive one. If so, you should find your team wins for often than not anyway *lol*.

Ok, so I'm not a great player... I'm not running on a particularly great set up either, and I'm afraid sometimes I let my team down by letting a skulk take me out (as a hmg/ha dood) because my ping momentarily skyrockets (it's usually ok though... dunno why it goes so high so suddenly).

And on the odd occasion I do something wrong (as we all do) and get flamed by teammates. Another thing that frustrates me are people who think they are too good to play with anyone not up to their standards (we can't all be 1337 sharpshooters). I swear I am NOT a newB. oO

So guys, if I screw up... I apologize. I'm not some arrogant twerp who thinks he knows better than you, I'm just trying my best. At least, if it all comes down to who wins in the end, I tried to help my team as best I could. I always do...

    ~ TractorCow

PS: I usually play on Optusnet (australian I think) and Gameplanet (nz server)... so if anyone there has any comments on my gameplay feel free to comment. o_O
