Well, I started with ns_caged.
Some people will not agree with me, but i say that it is the simplest to learn.
It is very flat, not to many ups and downs, though i find that the minimap does not represent the map very well, as the marine start is hard to identify.
ns_tanith is also alright, though it's a bit more confusing.
I would definately not start with ns_bast, no matter how pretty it is, it has VERY confusing vents, and I STILL get confused by it, and I've been playing since release.
The biggest labyrint is hera of course, but that is the reason that it is my favourite map. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
also, get the overhead maps that are posted on this forum, or go to
<a href='http://www.mayberrygames.com/ns.html' target='_blank'>http://www.mayberrygames.com/ns.html</a>
playing with an overhead printed out GREATLY increases your speed in learning the maps.
gl! (that's good luck, not grenade launcher for any of you vets out there <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> )
avoid
ns_nothing(massive), ns_hera(labrinthian), ns_nancy(if only because the unnamed hive can mess you up a bit, and the vents are quite expansive)
i have a print of ns_nothing in front of my comp on the wall coz it's my fav map ...plz dont say i have gone to far...

Heh. I know this reply is of absolutely no value to the conversation on hand, but... You have no idea how cool that is to hear.
;D
oh and:
<a href='http://www.tribes2maps.com/ns/' target='_blank'>great over heads</a>
-Eclipse is simple but the corridors near computer core look alike and tend to get people confused.
-Hera isn't as confusing as it is made out to be, all the areas are instantly recognisable.
-Nothing is very confusing for a new player. I've seen people go round and round in circles trying to find a way out of the Powersilo / Viaduct area.
-Bast is confusing at first, the main things to learn are the vents system.
-Nancy is smaller than Bast, but still has a very perplexing vents system.
I think one of the best ways to learn any map is to start a lan server, put cheats on, make yourself some MCs get celerity, spawn another hive for leap and run around as a skulk
you will learn the map and the vent system (vents are so crucial to survival on both sides, f you know here you can pop in and out of and what enterances there are to cover, dear god it helps)
also it would probbly be a good idea to print one of those over head maps
oh and the commands to type in the console for cheats are:
sv_cheats 1
bigdig
spawnhive (Aliens only)
and something along the lines of givepoints
After playing for a few weeks, all maps got to be easier to navigate. But now and again I'll find some place in the maps I never been before, even after months of playing...and I still hate playing on Bast as a marine! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
And [watch me die] did you get your sig off the suggestions forum a few days ago? Someone posted about juggyurnuts armor. It was ridiculous, but fun to flame.
[I brake for Gorges]

Aliens aren't as straightforward to learn as marines. As marines, you have a commander telling you what to do, and after a while, you get to pick up the game from the marine perspective pretty easy.
When you're skulking about, the best thing you can do is learn the vent systems, and just listen to your teammates (assuming they know what they're doing). Once you get used to skulk vision being so low to the ground, chomping marines is easy. Just don't go gorge. Ever. Until you've logged like 500+ hours or so and you've watched gorges doing their gorge thing.
It's my experience that since noobs always like to go marine, there's always a demand for aliens. ^_^
