What the hell is going on in that screenshot? Theres like, a load of icons in the commander menu that dont exist (looks like some carraaazyy armageddon type explosion icon) and the kill icons look all carazy, there aren't any grenades in NS, right?
Oh and whats the stuff about getting point for killing an enemy? We tried this on the LAN (mp_tournamentmode 1?) but we didnt get points for killing the enemy or their structures...

The scent-of-fear sprites were the original motion-tracking icons.
The explosion is a button for dropping a nuke (search the forums to find out more about them).
The blue cloud is the old Spore Cloud.
The grenade kill sprite is a CS placeholder.
Several of the buttons are also placeholders; from top left to bottom right those buttons are ammo, health, mines, scanner, welder, shotgun, GL, HMG.
The map is an *old* version of Hera; if you look closely, you'll see a resource node on the landing pad south of the Marine Start.
This is when the marine team and individual aliens gained resources for kills.
I'm damn grateful they changed THAT <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
(I guess that me posting this could be construed as me volunteering to take some new screenshots -- hey, I wouldn't be opposed to taking some screenies the next time I hit a pub server.)
I'm sure thats a flamethrower - see in the pic, the commanders menu there is NO WAY that that is not a flamethrower.

yes. (assuming you meant retarded)
I know what you mean. I checked out the results since it was posted on ns.org that NS won for Best Mod. Went straight to PC games...then had to pretty much search around until I eventually found it. There were about 16 different entry pages I could look at with various titles like "Best Worse Game." It's in there on entry #14...
However, I just rechecked the link on ns.org, and it SHOULD take you to the proper page that has the award listed (unlike before)....it's the last one at the bottom...and DAMN that screenshot is old! How'd they end up with that one out of all the screenshots they could have used!
Natural Selection (for Half-Life)
Natural Selection is possibly the most ambitious user-made modification ever brought to fruition. This multiplayer-only mod somehow manages to transform the aging Half-Life into a seemingly brand-new, atmospheric, and surprisingly deep action-strategy game, pitting hive-minded aliens against resourceful space marines.
Natural Selection's innovations are too numerous to list, but the marine's "commander" mode deserves special mention. Playing as the marine commander, you can order and re-supply other marines in an RTS-style, top-down perspective. This unusual concept not only works, but works well. Then again, it's hard to fault any aspect of Natural Selection: sounds, environments, gameplay, the interface ... it's all very professionally done and polished to a shine.
We're astounded that the Half-Life engine continues to evolve, spawning successful, amazing mods like Natural Selection four years after its original release. Charles Darwin would be proud.
