<div class="IPBDescription">and I need to decide on an os</div> I've been running RH 7.3 and 8.0 vigoursly for that past few months now. I've got a second little box sittin here that I can toy with and I was wondering what distro I should go with. Slackware / debian / gentoo are all prospects. So, whatcha think?

Try all three, and see which one suits your style.
Gentoo has a nice package systems, but it loses it's novelty after a while. I used it for about...2 weeks then switched back to slack <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->.
www.freebsd.org
The ports collections rocks, its also the best internet realated OS.
Google uses it, it must be good! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
FreeBSD also has support for linux binaries (glibc).

Yeah, I also think freebsd would be good. In fact let me empthesize, make it cost less (box version), and I would support them. I don't remember how much it costs now a days.
Running a gentoo machine @ home & our gameserver also runns gentoo. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
actually ... portage (gentoos package system) is kinda clone from BSDs port system.
If you want to support the FreeBSD project, I recommend ordering media from one of:
FreeBSD Mall, Inc. <a href='http://www.freebsdmall.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.freebsdmall.com/</a>
Daemonnews, Inc. <a href='http://www.bsdmall.com/freebsd1.html' target='_blank'>http://www.bsdmall.com/freebsd1.html</a>
It will cost you 40 bones and no stones for the CDs. If you don't have the spare rocks, but have a fast internet connection, download the installation floppies and do an FTP installation.
Be warned, the linux_base port (linux binary compatibility) was recently busted a bit. I have a PR filed with a fix, but it hasn't made it into the ports tree yet. Check out <a href='http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/47573' target='_blank'>http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/47573</a> . The fix is a simple alteration to a few files before installing the port.
it's really pro and i like it, never hacked once and never crashed...
No one has ever tried to root my box(that I know of... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->), and it gets a little dull trying to secure a box that no one is trying to crack. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
I wish I had a more script-kiddy friendly ISP...Then I could protect my apache server from all the latest IIS exploits!
Oh, and here's a little hijack:
Whats your current uptime? *grin*
Mine:
root@gw:/serv/hlds/ns/addons/amx/examples/wshare$ uptime
18:09:14 up 109 days, 5:20, 10 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
does lsmod show your nic?
i beleive u have the game as mine and your doing what i did. trying to install from rc1 instead of rc2
It's better and it sounds cooler than gentoo....

oh well...i'm trying to update mine but i keep failing on "iconv" sooooo i think i need to recompile gcc with i686 arch first...then glibc under i686...then REcompile gcc with athlon-xp arch.....then REcompile glibc with athlon-xp arch....and gcc for the last time with athlon-xp arch.
(btw, thats how gentoo does it...it just has a "emerge" script to do it for ya)
Anyhoo, Spiffy, I hope you're not planning on compiling X or GNOME... It sucks mighty hard when you're sleeping hoping that you don't get any cryptic compile errors and you wake up to realize you've just wasted a nights worth of electricity.
I suppose if you're running a server you shouldn't be stupid enough to install them in the first place...
No *real* distro doesn't give you an easy way to opt out of installing all that new-fangled stuff. With gentoo, you've got to emerge the ebuild, so it's more of an opt-in thing. Now, we must convince spammers to take notes from gentoo...
gdb - debugger
screen - nice app to launch ns with
proftpd - nice secure ftp (dont open anonymous) used to upload files
Thats it!
My box now can run NS, CS, TOD and I didnt have to muck with all those rpm's. Just 'apt-get'.
Debian - My Linux choice
I'm using slackware 8.1 right now...but i have to update the glibc and gcc compiler <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
amoung other things...but i'm not disappointed.
Plaintext passwords! Eeek!
Use SFTP or SCP. Good SFTP clients are hard to come by, that there's a wicked windows GUI'd SCP for those who don't have *nix workstations:
