So-called L33ts On A Newbie Server

Come on, people...
After a 20-minute waste of my time last night, I gotta vent this...

If you know your NS, and think you're l33t, stay the hell OFF servers marked as newbie servers. If that's the only place you can pwn, then you're nothing but a joke.

Some of us are actually trying to LEARN to play the game so we can get off newbie status without disrupting those of you who like to play good games.

Crikey.

I agree totally with you. I see a lot of new players flow in and out of our nC server, and it saddens me to see people gloat about killing NSPlayer(4), and the like.

Ah, but the human nature, and it's sense of insecurities will most likely prevail, csauing a flame to spout, followed by the onrush of others screaming obscenities as the gather pitforks and torches in the fight against your "noobism".

-nC- (Non Clanners guild, run by Hounddawg, the guy who runs UnitedAdmins), has an NS server, and we help new players out. You might have to put up with some of the "locals" though, but we'll set them in line. 207.126.64.35:27035
We also run cheating death on optional setting, so, if you play at the server a few times and like it, you might want to pick up a client side of it at the United Admins webpage.

Anyway, good luck in your quest to find people who don't need to feed their ego.

I sometimes join newbie servers in order to give help or motivation. I tend to join marines because I a significantly worse marine then alien, or com, because the marines allways need a good chair, even on a newbie server. I generally keep away from playing aliens, though... I r0x too much. :\

I have never seen a server marked as a "newbie" server, I will often run into newbs, and yes I will munch on them. However I will also help out anyone who asks reasonable Qs (if you ask how you get better weapons I will generaly ignore them b/c it is in the tutorial, but what ever)
• DWGuyDWGuy Join Date: 2003-01-26 Member: 12754Members
I've never really come across any servers actually marked "for newbies", but like Thansal I do run into a lot of of them. If they're on the opposing team, I will not hesitate to kill them, but usually if they start asking "darn, how am i suppose to kill you?", I'll start giving them tips and strategies. There will always be new players, but it's no fun to munch on newbies all day. Teaching them to rise up and get better will make them better players and make the game more enjoyable as there will be more experienced players to make the game more challenging and push the limits of strategy and tactics.

I know us l33t like to much on those n00bs.
Imagine us as an example of a better ns player and as a school bully on ns. We sum times just like to pick on weaker players

nothing more fun than knifing newb aliens

I could maybe see someone who is a good commander play on a newbie server as long as he commands, cause that would actually help newbie marines get a better feel of the game, but for the most part...

Yeah, if your not a noob you should get off the newbie servers and play against people who can own you.

I like to help newbies with questions they have. Especially the ones that think before asking questions but I have yet to join a newbie server that actually has newbies playing. Many NS newbies are CS veterens so it's really not nessessary to go so easy on them and the game isn't about kills anyway.

If any newbies see me playing feel free to ask me any questions you have.

I am thinking of running an NS boot camp session if I get enough takers, this will be about an hour, 30 minute marines and 30minute aliens for newbies to ask all the questions they want and explorer the different structures uses followed by a game or 2 - newbie vs newbie. I would password protect the server to avoid l33t l4m3r5 j01|\|1|\|9

For this 'boot camp' I would class a newbie as anyone who has played less than 20 games and still has questions about how the game features interact.

Mail / PM me if this is of interest to you?

I usually join "newbie" servers just so I can comm without being yelled at or so I can just gorge (I am a good gorge, but I rarely get to play it at game start because someone else does it. Also, I personally HATE D->M->S and believe that if you can't live without carapace, then your a horrible alien player. [Someone was screaming and swearing over voice comm to get D chambers so he could get carapace.])

But, unlike DWGuy and Thansal, I have seen 1 NS server marked a "newbie" server. (Its called "Newbie Proving Grounds v1.04" or something like that.)

If you can bust a fortified marine base without carapace, you are a GODLY alien player. For Flayra's sake what the hell is wrong with D-M-S? As a dedicated skulker I know that you go down FAST without that carapace.

Aye, I play there sometime. Its good fun if your in the mood to have a mess about rather than trying to win, as the chances are that the newbies will be busy trying to figure it out to play totally properly. Also I like to help out any newbies with any questions they have, simply because no one ever did that for me. For example, on my first ever game, I saw people building structures, and didn't know how to do it, so I tryed welding them and stuff, and asking. All I got was laughed at.

And before anyone says it, I did read the manual, several times in the days leading up to 1.0 release.

Movement = super fast skulks = you don't get hit enough to die. I do play on newbie servers, but it is to help the newbies out. I find that I have to play alien about 99%, due to the fact for some reason every newbie heads straight for marines.
• eagleceaglec Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9948Members, Constellation
Many newbies head for marines because they want a gun, others read the drop down boxes and head for marines because that's what they are told to do.
Isn't it time we change that drop down to read "If you new to Natural Selection, observe a match or two before joining the team of your choice"

Well the CS skills do not apply to aliens. I have yet to see any terrorists climbing the wall and hopping on counter terrs and biting them in the head. As fun as that would be I think that cs skills apply only to the marines.

I can respect people who go on n00b servers to learn the comm chair or to help out and such. That's not what I'm complaining about.

I'm complaining about freaking human aimbot marines who lock n00bs out of the frontiersman team with their numbers so n00bs are forced to play alien, and then brag over the "y" key chat about how many kills they're racking up, how awesome they are, and asking what the hell we're doing playing NS in the first place.

Grrrrr...... >_<

I have to admit that, at first, I used to play Marines all the time. Mainly cos I didn't like the "feel" of the aliens. Now, I mostly go random, which means being aliens because of all the people piling into the marines gate.

I think I'm getting the hang of aliens now but still wouldn't gorge or fade, it'd be a waste on me. I like to harass the marines as skulk and then go lerk later to back up the fades with umbra.

I have no problem with noobs with an iq of over 10.

If you read the manual and don't understand thats cool ask away.
If you don't read the manual and understand then u have an iq above 10.

If u join the god dam frigging server like some cs moron whine on about getting a decent gun then get abuse what the hell do u expect.

Lame noobs are ruining ns because they dont want to learn. They just want a hmg or 'eject the fag commander'

I play on the H2O servers, mostly H2O 7 and this is what happens in the morning-

I am comm, most our team are cs players / noobs. I get hassled for shotties, non of them follow orders we all die and i get blamed.

In the evening-

The vets come on, i am comm we totally ownz i get praised for my commanding.

The reason noobs get so much hassle is because of the 'cs l33ts' that come over to ns thinking that they are amazing at it.

I haven't seen any newb dedicated servers. I doubt we have any down under.

But I do see, quite often, unbalanced teams. After a while you get to know the other players, and you realise that when you're skulk and all the marines are in the same, particularly good, clan and you're stuck with a bunch of newbies... the game is going to be particularly painful.
• KMGorKMGor Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9299Members
Many pubs have a large majority of newbies playing on them. Many others have lots of n00bs, which are the people who suck but think they rock... I tend to help out newbies if they ask about something, but n00bs I don't.

And anyways, I don't see why people brag about killing nsplayers, which I have seen. Always dumb. Now, bragging when you bag, say, a member of sYn or ReD while they're JP HMGing on way to hive, that maybe.

I played against aliens who went sensory chamber first (i think thats the right name - it gives you cloacking ability). Well, they kicked our **** really fast. Why? Cos we coulndt see them. Even after researching tracking you still have difficulty spotting a motionless skulk.

When i play aliens and i go gorge, then i usually go D-M-S, because doing if i do it otherwise i will get a ton of abuse and be called freaking noob etc etc, i saw that happen many times.
• Cadet_OrcwipeCadet_Orcwipe Join Date: 2003-02-13 Member: 13508Members
The only time I ever laid into someone for going sensory first was when the marines already had relocated to one of our hives, and had turrets all over the place in it.

Then again, it's not like I was the only one who wasn't pleased about it....

YIIKES! another flame fest!!!

SMD is pretty close to "NS? UNBALANCED!!" in so far as TROLL baiting. imho.

well, actually, in NS forums not so much flames, but 1000000 views and 9 pages of responses
