I have seen this tactic more often. Now people arnt rushing just to kill the marines, but only thier starting res tower. It messes the marines up for a while, allowing you to have time to do things (gaurd hives, get upgrades, ect)
It works. If I tell the aliens to do this, it is usually done. So as long as the starting RT is in some kind of nook so when marines approach you just divert your attention a bit to your new snack.
I just nibble a bit. A marine approaches. Jump in his face and 2 chomps hes down. Rinse and repeat. You can take out the whole team if you're careful enough. Even if they come 2 at a time, 3 at a time, doesn't matter since they need to come CLOSE to you which in that situation: you >>> marines.
Most starting RTs are close to the entrance/exits of the marine start, so it is easiest building to get to... not to mention the huge potential economic impact of it. With no RT, they have nothing but a trickle of RPs coming in.
An obs is just an obs, but killing the *first* and *only* RT is much more evil.

Oh, I'll go for the RT on some maps, but I just find the obs a better first choice at the start of the game (pre-cara) as you're more likely to live long enough to chomp it. And for some reason, comms are obsessed with putting obs in crazy behind cc places, where you are actually MORE shielded from fire.
I tend to go for things like the obs tower or the armoury just to be annoying to the marines <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> it has the addes bonus that they need these structures to get phase gates.
Going for the RT makes sense, because all the other structures can be quickly replaced with enough resources. It doesn't matter if they can build a phasegate into an empty hive, if they can't secure it fast enough. The RT on most maps is usually the easiest structure to take out, because its normally the furthest from the other marine structures and its the best structure for strafing around without blocking your field of view, its umbrella shape means marines have to get close to kill you.

Yeah. Taking out an Rt HURTS the marines like hell, if you guys can pull it off. But I've only seen it happen a few times out of a bunch of attempts. Decent marines will shoot you the moment you start coming thru the door. And especially if they see you going for the res node. Then comes the welding. And remember if you're spending time in their base trying to chew that res tower, you're not spending time out in the field chewing the other res towers the comm is bound to put up. and those are a lot harder to defend than their RT in base.

depending on the success of the 3-4 at diverting/killing that node can drop and that causes marines some definate slowdown
