Leap...

What's with these rumors of contact dmg?
Ok, I saw a recent thread about Leap, where everyone was encouraged to try it out against buildings, turrets etc, and even attack marines with it. So in a few games, I made a point of trying it out on a few undefended marine structures. And I didn't get *anything*. After several leaps (from distance, from close by, from above, holding crouch, holding forward) I hadn't done a speck of damage - all I saw was a nice green full circle. Can someone tell me exactly what I'm supposed to be doing? Is there supposed to be a contact noise when you're doing damage? I was excited to hear about people having so much success with the leap, but after trying it I still can't find any use other than for getting around damn quickly. Help!

Well, I dont know if it damages the buildings, but it does damage the marines. I heard if you can stick to the marine during the whole duration of the attack, you can deal up to 16 damage. It aint much, but when you learn how to use it well and/or combine it with bite, it becomes very useful.

Just as with the onos charge, you must keep pressing into your target to do damage. Now, that's pretty hard against most targets, as you slide off unless you are perfectly aligned towards them. Using walking mode helps, as your speed goes down. It's extra hard against moving targets such as marines, but can be done - more from luck than skill though.

The damage done is nice but not spectacular - usually, unless you are good at it and need to do as much damage as possible in five seconds or less, you are better off biting. About 200 pts/sec, as compared to the bite 120 pts/sec.

The best place to use it is against turrets that are so close together you can't get through, or against turret factories against a wall. Just squeeze yourself in, press forward and aim a bit down, then leap five times, one leap per second. That will leave you with empty energy and your target with about 1000 hits in damage - which is just the hitpoints of a turret.

The nice thing with leap is that it is area damage, so if you can squeeze yourself in between two marine buildings, you are doing 400 pts/sec.

As a comparison, the onos does four times the damage with its charge, or about 800 hits/sec. That takes down even a max armored HA marine in less than a second.

I personally have not had many kills with charge, I prefer paralisise, and bite.

my problem with leap and charge is the aim, you leap/charge at watever you point at and if it moves you can't steer while leaping/charging, causing me to miss most marines cause they turn into jumping beans when they see aliens

heh i just learned how to use it actually! it's sweet! all you have to do is jump in between the naturally-herding marines and you've taken down like 4 of em! sucks when you run out of adreneline tho... then i usually die....guess i need to work on an escape plan ... but i'm still learning!

I thought leap did 16dmg * # of "touches". While Charge only does 10dmg * # of "touches", but it lasts a LOT longer and "touches" more things doing more damage in total.

The easiest way in the world to see Leap damage is to stand on top of an Armory, look straight down, and leap.

If you think leap does no damage, you've obviously never seen StoneToad play. The man is a leaping fiend. Little leapy death icons all over the place. It's scary.

everyone prolly already said this...I dont feel like reading all of the posts

The proper way to use leap is a quick way to get marines. You have to use leap and bite in the same sequence to do massive damage. Type hud_fastswitch 1 and that makes it so when you press 1 or 3 it instantly switches to that weapon. You dont have to go 1 *click*.

You take out leap, aim at a marine, try to hit him, then press 1 INSTANTLY and bite him. If you do it correctly you can do over 100 damage in one pass

    Leap
    click -- 1!!
    hold mouse1

Leap may be good if the marine does not have full health...

leaping is pretty much all I use now as second hive ability skulk. It does great against flesh but I too can't get it to work well with structures. Very iffy if you ask me. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Leap is definitely a marines nightmare when the marine is in the vent since leap is so effective in vents.

Yep, I killed a marine with leap just last night. HE was cramped in the end of a vent, so I hit him with leap, and just kept leaping until it killed him... That was a first for me ...

I'm not all that great at using leap as a weapon (I've had a few kills), but I LOVE it as an ability. I'm the type of person that uses skulk the whole game, because they're just more fun. Leap, with level three adrenaline, can get you past ANY sort of marine structures or force completely unscathed. I use it all the time to attack them from behind. I'll leap over them into a vent (using two or three leaps in a row to stay airborne), then exit the vent in some other hallway. Then I can either attack their forward base from behind (and take out a phase, for instance), or just munch my way through their rear guard
Leap is also deadly against grenade launcher marines. Wait for that fourth explosion, then run out and leap onto his face. Once he goes down, leap back out of there before his "OMG THERE'S A SKULK ON MY FACE FIRE FIRE FIRE!!!" grenades go off
Oh, and use the Q key a lot. Just use lastinv to switch between bite and leap.

on a similar note. i just wanted to remind skulks to use leap to fight marines. leap past them or right at them around a corner. they arent prepared to fight you pt blank most of the time.

I love leap. Not only does it do great damage when used right and give you a fighting chance in the vents, but it also provides the ability to get in close, which is essiential for any skulk to do.

I use bite versus structres and leap versus marines. Leap does plenty of damage and makes you move so fast you are really hard to hit.

Leap isn't that great against structures, unless you're suicide-whittling a turret farm down to where you can move and bite instead, without dying in five seconds or less. Marines though, especially with three Leaping Skulks... they just don't know where to aim, and fire every which way. Wait for the 'click click', then let them get their pistol empty, and move in for a nice leisurely meal. But be careful of the knives.

That'd actually be kinda cool... get a Pugilism upgrade that removes the knife, or replaces it with brass knuckles, a roundhouse kick, or a back kick depending on which way you're moving at the moment, as with the lightsaber duels in JK2. Deliver some beatdown hand to hand. Only problem then would be seeing some Marine laying the beatdown on a Skulk... while bouncing around like a ***king moron.

has anyone else seen skulk leap flying? i'm not sure which map it is, but the one with the very large hive, as in very large area, the "inaccessible" catwalk on top, the one where the hive is actually underneath another walkway.... my point is, as a skulk you can basically leap/fly anywhere in that room, making the skulk just about as effective as the lerk. my little brother used to do it a bit.. i personally haven't tried it much but it looks... interesting.

    My best leap to date:

From the bottom of the Marine Start elevator on Bast. Leap up once, up again (in midair) to be inside the Marine Start, and the horizontally across the room *through the window into the CC alcove*. It was a perfect shot. (:

I've gotten quite a few leap kills before. I'm not sure how. Maybe the marine was already weak or something. It doesn't do too much damage, but can be effective in large groups. Plus, leap kills are fun.
