Nooooo. The least newbie friendly game is probably CS. I got utterly slayed when I was new at that. The majority of the NS community is nice, dont judge it by a few people.

Try joining a few other servers. Look for players with the title [NSGUIDE] in front of their screennames. Look for players with [EC] or [EGC] as well. Look for servers labeled as newbie friendly or training.
Or just make broad sweeping statements about the game, the same way those players did about you.
Look for clans. At least clans with servers for a generalization... Just tell everyone that you are new when you join, do not just go off and try to do stuff without knowing how.
