im sure it will be *better*
although i also do not see the point..i can fly the lerk as it is
I believe the changes are being made so that they can combat jetpacks
I think flayra said he wants to make so they can fly and shoot at the same time, right now at 1 hive you cant do that very long.
Personally, I can't wait to see what he turns out like.
The only thing which bugs me is that in-game a JP is easier to control then a lerk, whilst my instincts tells me a living creature should be easier to 'control' then marine with a JP stuck to him.
Or in other words, I would have expected the lerk to be easier to control then the JP, not the other way round.
I would guess that flying will take either no or minimal amounts of energy up in 1.1.
anyway...there were these ledges on the ceiling..and we'd rest on there...then we would take off and fly at each other trying to hit each other with spikes...it would of looked really cool..then when our energy went down, we'd land on the ledges again..and so on...
I also love parasiting the doors..so much fun to puzzle the marines..and..then..*CHOMP*
i bet suttle changes like;
hold down space and continual flapping ( gliding ? )
more directional control
but member, this is HL engine... i mean.. halflife heh, not a bloody flight simulater engine ... so be easy if it still handles like a truck.

Flay is the best programmer ever...hell he manages to push a 4 year old Engine to new levels of detail and amazement...and he got Commander Mode to work too...
You have to tap JUMP to fly and hold down DIRECTION to move. At the same time, you have to aim and spike. The biggest problem of all is they run out of energy rapidly if they want control...
From the suggestions people come up for Lerk so far, I say it can only get better.
Lerks needs some redesigning if D/M/S isn't going to be the standard way to build.

Holding down space already makes you glide o_o First time i tried Lerk i jumped and held it down and i was like whoa these guys can jump really far. Then like a few days later I saw a Lerk actually flying and i was like what the hell they can fly?! So I went lerk and tried pressing jump a lot and realized i could fly. So fun..
Simply put, the lerk should fall at normal speed unless he's gliding.
The lerk can reach incredible speeds, and those speeds don't seem to drop off at all until he hits something. The reason the jetpack is so maneuverable is this: when you start to jetpack in a new direction, your forward momentum falls off very rapidly and your new angle of thrust kicks in quickly as well. The result, a smoothly turned corner. When you try to change direction as a lerk, you gain sideways momentum but you retain your full speed ahead and thus hit the wall. The lerk should easily be able to move in midair - adjusting its wings like the parachutes behind a drag racer - banking its wings and strafing like a harrier. You should, basically, be able to +moveleft, +moveright, and move +back while in the air... transferring your forward momentum to the desired direction, with some loss of speed due to friction and wind resistance etc. Perhaps you'll have to "flap" your wings to do this, too. That's fine. The only way to -gain- velocity is to flap in the direction you're already going..
The other thing that needs to be done is that you should not go UP with every flap as much as you currently do. If you're moving forward (or any other direction), you should only go up enough to keep you at (roughly) your current altitude. You should go up at the current rate if you're not pushing any movement keys. This would be partially fixed already if you just fell at a normal rate. I can't count the times I've caught my head on a strange piece of level geometry and been killed while trying to run away. This just isn't fitting behavior for a creature who is supposed to be a natural flyer.
Someone suggested you fly forward in whichever direction you're facing - on the surface this seems like an interesting idea, but I would prefer to be able to flap up / left / right / fall down while facing forward as I spike marines etc. In general I would like to be able to strafe - to fly in a direction I'm not currently facing.
The only thing which bugs me is that in-game a JP is easier to control then a lerk, whilst my instincts tells me a living creature should be easier to 'control' then marine with a JP stuck to him.

Crashing into walls though... yeah, thats a problem.
